I got this off of craigslist yesterday. This guy said a friend of his gave it to his son for band. As far as I can find, this is about a 1960 model. It has a very cool throw and butt and the rims are like stick saver. The bottom rim is pretty cool where the snare goes through it. It has a very unusual snar apparatus. Looks like maple with rerings. There are 2 extra holes (why is there usually a extra hole!!??) The badge says "PREMIER MADE AND REGD IN ENGLAND" Anyone know anything about this drum? heres pics>>>

It has the slotted tension rods. I just noticed the vent hole in the Badge is tiny 3/16-1/4" diameter. Im hoping those extra holes are original for something....

Lovely color Ace you have there. I have a few, I like them, great sound. The strainer system is known as the Flowbeam (wires drop down from both ends, adjustment knobs at both ends). Are your wires one piece or two pieces? Those two holes would not have been there from Factory. Possibly someone added some sort of mount (stand, wood block, cowbell?) to it. Vents are 3/16" difficult to find as standard drum grommets, they can be found elsewhere. I would just add grommets to those holes and not try to fill or re-wrap the drum, leave it as it is. Newer wraps are too thick and will give you problems fitting heads. The old wrap was a very thin acetate, very fragile. If you need new wires Baskey Vintage has replacements http://www.baskeyvintage.com/products_snare.html
I have a set of 2-12 strands here right now.....made in England for 2000 model...........
I'll go $50 to your door.........
Fortunatly the wires are good. I like to grommett idea. Thanks!
Its a very cool old snare!

Cool Royal Ace! Looks like there are already grommets in those two extra holes?
If not, here's my proposal:
- close the holes from inside with exactly fitting round pieces of wood, so that they nearly come up to the surface from inside.
- Take away some of the lugs and cut out round pieces in this hidden area and place them (cutted down exactly to the shape of the holes) over the holes.
- Glue them onto the wooden round pieces.
- Ready.
This should work - unless the sparkle is faded and there's a difference in the colour visible: then I would prefer the other solution.

Thanks Ralf, I have filled plenty of holes in my time. Theres not many repairs that I haven't done already to a drum.........Lets not forget to grind the plug so it is rounded to conform to the curved shell, and dont put it flush with the wrap, but flush with the shell so the rapiar piece is even with the wrap. Also, I would probably have to heat the wrap under the lug a little so it will cut easier and heat the pieces going on top of the plug so it will contour to the curve of the shell. Its extremly hard to get all this perfect, unless you have a machine shop and some very cool cutters. The grommett idea would be a lot easier.

I would just like to add "LOVVERLY SNARE!" to this thread!
I am also a Premier drum enthusiast!

One of the reasons Premier drums of the 60s through 80s sound so good is that their shells (like Sonor's) are undersized. Therefore, a thicker re-wrap would not present a head fit problem.
That Royal Ace is a beauty! Mine is below.
