1960-1963 Ludwig supraphonic Last viewed: 6 hours ago

So I was in guitar center today to buy some puresound snares and I noticed a pre-serial number badge supraphonic in the velvet case, with a wfl snare stand. It was posted for $250 but it wasn't available for purchase until February because it was too new. Still on pawn or something I guess so I put it on layaway. hopefully the guy don't come and pick it up.

THE QUESTION:

whats that puppy worth? I see supraphonics for like 2 to 5 hundred dollars. Whats the difference? It had a baseball bat muffler didn't see how many lugs it was I was too excited to check. It also had the original snare.

its worth that for sure. 99 percent of all supraphonics are 10 lugs. even with the baseball bat muffler, there is a small chance that it could be a chrome over brass model. it would need to have crimped snare beds and a few more factors. that would raise the value substantially. either way, the pre serials usually bring a little more than the later models. they usually have chrome over brass hoops instead of steel hoops which increases the value some. good luck!

Sounds to me that you got a real nice drum at a reasonable cost. Congratulations!

I feel sorry for the drummer who was so down on his luck, he had to pawn his favorite snare drum for peanuts. If the guy can't come up with the money in time, I hope you get it. At least it will be played and appreciated. But, for now, I'm rooting for the original owner to catch a little wind in his sails and get his drum back.

Too many great drums to list here!

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

This is exactly what it is. GC isn't a pawn shop, they don't let you pawn your stuff, you sell it to them outright. Required by law to make sure that it isn't someone's stolen property.

thanks for the input guys! I found it kind of weird that I couldn't buy it for 30 day, but the police holds thing makes sense. the clerk said that the guy who sold it inherited it from his dad and had no idea what it was. I wonder why he didn't at least look it up.

30 hold means when they buy used gear they have to hold it 30 days to make sure it doesn't come up as a stolen item. But I know from experience you can put it on layaway. That will get it off the sales floor and make sure you are the one who gets it.
