1959 Ludy ID Help Please!

Loading...

I've got a chance to purchase this drum from a friend of a friend. Not a real Ludy guy so I want to make sure my opinion is correct. From what I've seen in the catalog shots on VDG it's a 5.5x14 Jazz Festival. The date stamp inside the shell is June 8, 1959, but the ludy catalog didn't offer a 5.5" in '59, so I'm guessing this was built in '60. P83 throw, Mahogany finish & no extra holes...oh, and in amazing condition.

Any thoughts or opinions on value?

Thanks in advance!

Dan

I have a 1960 Jazz Fest (shell date stamped 1959) that is 5". It's identical to the one in the 1960 catalog. I think that was the first year for the 5" Jazz Fest, although the Drum Guide does say there were some 5 1/2"ers out there. I also am not aware that a Jazz Fest was ever offered with a mohogany finish. Maybe the Lugwig historians will answer this.

That's a trans badge, pretty nice to have in a collection, as the badges only were used for a couple of years.

It could be the pic but that looks like a 6 1/2" to me. Nice drum, if you don't want it let me know!

That looks like a 6 lug 6.5 x 14 to me, making it a pioneer. It may be in the catalog as Supreme Concert snare, that's what it was called in the wfl years. I would say around $150 for the value.

It is an 8 lug with a P83, that's why I'm a little confused. Here's a few more pics.

Ok, then it's an auditorium like Tamadrm said.

The Auditorium would be ONLY a 6 1/2 or 8, not a 5 1/2. Barrett Deems models would have the "Classic" strainer, not a P-83. It is possible this is a Jazz Festival, but at the time of the trans-badge, you can only bet on the strainers as to what the actual model is, because there is also a Buddy Rich model at 5.5x14, at the same time the Barrett Deems model was available, so the where is the strainer in relation to the badge...there are so many questions left, or rather brought about, by not knowing these simple, yet mostly over-looked details. It takes a lot of research to fully understand even the difference between a Deems and a Rich model, let alone the possibility it was a special order for some school somewhere...just a lot of questions it takes to bring a definite answer.

Hey guys, thanks for your input! Got a few more pics & details, this is a one owner pass down thru the family drum and I'm a little surprised about the shape it's in. The snare is an 8 lug, 14"x6.5" & all the hardware bares the WFL stamp except the trans badge. So now the question is, Auditorium or Barrett Deems?...or something else...I don't know, but one way or another it will be mine tomorrow! Seen similar drums going for $150 & up, anyone have any clues as to the value? I'm not a Ludy guy, but this is one nice drum! Here are some new pics I got today.
