1950 Gretsch snare shell rescue Last viewed: 4 weeks ago

I picked this up a few days ago.

I don't know why on earth someone would put this thick black lacquer on a 1950 Gretsch snare shell - yikes! It seems to be such a nice shell - it could have been re-wrapped at least. But, now it has a different future.

I cleaned the lacquer off and found one very tiny piece of what appears to be sparkle wrap left on - before the lacquer was applied.....wow!

It's 6.5x14 - 3ply of course - drilled out for 16 lugs, Micro-Sensitive strainer with the single point butt end and the horizontal mount mute.

It looks like it will clean up nicely and will be the perfect fit for my Cadillac Green shell project. It's taking a while to get all the parts together. I do need one more horizontal mounted mute and a Jimmy Pratt bass drum mute to complete the picture.

I did a 'dry-run test' and put the drum together and (last photo) and everything fits good. I will do some more sanding and tweek it before it goes to the painter. I won't do anything to the edges except try to clean them as best I can.

Got all the shell now..........

I'm really excited to see the final state of this project. Do you plan on gold plating the hardware?
