Just picked up a 1940s Gretsch Broadcaster 24x14 bass drum. Missing the badge and one claw/t-rod. Lugs are in good shape. Needs to be refinished. I'll post more as I work on it.

Sweet kick, man. Are you piecing together a kit or just restoring for the fun of it?

Both, actually. It will be the anchor for my Levon Helm / Fred Young "tribute" kit. It's not quite what I was looking for, but I've been waiting a year to find the right drum. Sometimes the right drum is the one you own. That sounded very reflective, but that was unintentional.

Haven't even has a chance to take it for a test drive. Too busy, for a change.

I saw no date in the shell. The bearing edges were all chewed up from years of abuse. A guy from the Chicago Drum Show liked it and wants to restore it to it's former glory, as he has some orphan shells that match it. I decided not to strip the paint and traded it for a 30s Ludwig 26x14. It was closer to the look I was going for. I will still keep my eyes open for a 24x14 single tension.

Turns out the Ludwig bass drum has birdseye maple veneer. It was originally wrapped in WMP, but it was in bad shape. The previous owner removed it.
