Hi,
I just finished restoring this set from the ground up and thought I'd share some photos. It's a 1940-41 set in original Sparkling Red Pearl. The condition of the set is beyond amazing. It was dusty and a bit dirty, so I disassembled everything and cleaned and polished the hardware and shells. The original finish has zero fade and none of the typical "spotting" associated with Sparkling Red from that era. The hardware is dripping in chrome! The Super Gene Krupa Radio King snare drum is unusual in that it has a three ply shell, thus supporting the theory that shell composition does not indicate whether a drum is a true Radio King.
The original owner apparently purchased all the "bells and whistles" with the set, including a Slingerland Sure-Grip triangle and holder (not shown), Sure-Grip woodblock and holder, two floor cymbal stands, Epic bass drum pedal with cymbal beater, Epic high hat stand, and Sure-Grip stick holder. Corduroy upholstered W&A throne, too. Ouch!
The 16x16 has non-Slingerland legs and leg brackets. In 1940-41, Slingerland had yet to add legs to their floor toms, so it's quite common to see them on Slingerland drums prior to 1947. The aluminum shell mounted cymbal holder is most likely a Leedy but has no markings.
The bass spurs are Leedy and the bass drum has Leedy & Ludwig internal tone controls. Original key, too!
It's quite possible that this set was purchased after the war and outfitted with the non-Slingerland attachments but who knows? If only they could talk!
