Hey guys,
Just picked up this 1939 Leedy Broadway Parallel snare. It is 8x14"
I almost bought it 6 months ago but the guy selling it got cold feet but decided to sell it a couple of days ago and contacted me to see if I was still interested before posting it which I thought was really cool.
This snare is in nice shape from what I can tell but I know very little about Leedy and snares this old. The shell is 3 ply and the interior is painted with 3910 stamped inside. The inside is nice and clean. The wrap is tight and shiny. The top bearing edge looks perfect. I haven't looked at the bottom bearing edge as I didn't want to mess with the snare wire mechanism. It has a hide resonant head and an old Weather Master Diplomat Concert batter head. The throw off works nice and smoothly. The internal muffler is there but is missing the external knob for it so I need to find one. Right now a wing nut is serving the purpose of the muffler adjustment knob. There is a key holder but I'm thinking it may not be original but I'm not sure on that. If not original, at least someone took the time to make sure it was centered. The key holder came loaded with a Rogers key which was kind of cool. The hardware is nickel and looks like it should shine up nicely but I might leave it as I like the look of dulled nickel. The hoops have some dings and show signs of use.
I have not messed with adjusting those individual snare wires yet. Never done that before.
It plays really nicely and sounds nice and dry.
It is amazing to me how well these things were built 80 years ago. I hope to be in half as good of shape when I hit 80!
Anyone else have any of these snares and have thoughts on them?
Any idea of a rough value? I'm not looking to sell but it is nice to have an idea.
Thanks,
Wes
