1930s Slingerland Universal hardware question

Loading...

I just received this old Slingerland Universal snare. 14x5. All original hardware with only one clip broken and a crack in one lug (not pictured). Everything else is fine.

What I find interesting about this drum is the gold paint on the lugs and rims. It doesn't appear to be recently spray painted on, and it wasn't pained on with a brush. I think it might be factory original.

It looks like it may have been ordered with "art gold" style hardware and a nickel shell. Was there an option to customize a Slingerland Universal snare in this way?

I ask because I will remove the paint if it isn't original. If it is original, I may leave it alone.

You can see what appears to be red and green primer under the gold paint.

Gold paint on the tube lug.

Not a catalog option on their low priced drums but I suppose anything is possible. Does look like artgold.

I think I'd leave that drum alone. It's a cool drum.

I removed a little bit, and it was rusty underneath. Oh well. Thought I had something unusual.
