1930's Premier Snare Drum

Loading...

Hi All

I recently acquired a Premier snare drum, it's about 14X5" I would say, Steel and has what appears to be the original heads.

The logo is engraved in a kind of script font, along with the words... DELUXE MODEL. According the the link below, it is from 1930!

It is identical to the one on this page (if you scroll down it's the one underneath the "Dominium Super snare drum" where you can see the engraved logo details)...

It's in a bit of a state and could stand to be refurbed. But I'm just wondering if any Premier guru's out there are able to tell anything about this drum?

Thanks for any help...

Hi, I'm on the road right now but from memory, the De Luxe had a range from the late 20s to the mid 30s. They came in a myriad of sizes 14 amd 15 inch and different depths, if I remeber correctly. Also, there were wood versions, as well, 14 and 15 inch and had oval badges. In fact there is one on Ebay UK right now but beware the snare mechanism seems to be missing it's lever

Here is a pic of a 15 wood version with oval badge before restoration

Here is a metal version, also 15, with the original Ivory Paint finish,

and matching bass drum

All three pieces are from the 1930s, I intend to refinish the blue wood De Luxe in it's original finish of Ivory

Hi,

I am looking at a 1930's Premier 'Popular Model' snaredrum.

It has 6 tension rods and is in good condition.

Do these snares sound good?

How much should i pay for it?

I've got a '20s metal Deluxe. It's a good sounding drum. I don't play it much, because I think the heads that are on it are metric. They're in good shape and I want to keep them that way. But yeah, those drums were very well made. I've no idea what they're worth. I paid about $350 for mine, plus $80 shipping from the UK.

hey guys,

I just picked up one of these Deluxe Models 14x5 and its missing the throw, but otherwise its in great condition. I see that its slightly undersized, so, which of the modern heads would fit it? I can get some kangaroo hide heads made to fit here in Australia, if need be.

I own a popular model snare drum with 6 lugs. My snare has been fitted out with Ludwig imperial lugs, a Ludwig butt plate and the shell has been drilled for a Ludwig p85 strainer. Also It has triple flanged hoops and not the original straight hoops. The shell is nickle plated brass and sounds very nice! It has a good tuning range and a nice warm tone as you'd expect from a brass snare. They're great drums and very well built. The snare beds on these drums are quite unique. They're crimped right on the flanged bearing edge and not on the shell like most metal drums. I'd recommend this snare for it's sweet sound! :)

Nick Hopkins deals in a lot of these vintage Premier drums and spare parts etc. Google his online store perhaps you can find the original part you need or alternatively find a strainer that will fit those holes. Is it a 3 point strainer? I have the popular model (6 lug) that has been drilled for a Ludwig strainer. It's a great players drum.
