1930s Gretsch/Zildjian/Ludwig kit value

Loading...

**EDIT: SEE MOST RECENT POST #18 ON PAGE 2**

Hello all, new member here. Hoping I can absorb some of your knowledge, here's the story.

This kit was given to me and my brother by my grandpa who bought it new, we got it as children so it took some unfortunate abuse. I have a box with all kinds of little hardware and pieces that have fallen off or been removed over the years, including the badge for the kick and mufflers for the low tom. The story I got from him is that he got it in the 30s and it is a custom color, i believe something along the lines of "silver starlight sparkle." He said the snare was bought off of a famous jazz drummer named Salvatori Capice in PA, google has nothing on this guy.

20" Kick

12" High tom

14" floor tom

14x4 Ludwig snare, 8 lugs

Cymbals- (I've looked into these before only to find out if they were K Zildjian, they alone would fund my new kit)

12" hi hats

15" crash (in bad shape)

12" splash (key holed)

20" ride

The hardware is a bit scattered. Hi hat stand is Ludwig speed king, the bass pedal was matching but I cant find the damn thing. Crash stand is Slingerland. The throne, ride stand, and snare stand (not pictured) are all unmarked. The splash arm (also not pictured) that comes off the kick is not vintage, i never received it and had to buy new parts. I even have leather strapped hard cases for the kick and toms, branded "The house of quality"

So, i'm trying to find out its true worth as a FULL kit, i'm considering selling it to fund the setup I've only dreamed about.

LOL - Funny, the kit you want to sell is what most guys around here would consider a 'Dream Kit!'

That's an extremely rare finish and very high quality set of drums. Why you'd want to sell them to buy something else is beyond my ability to understand, but to each his own.

Welcome to VDF!

Keep them! You'll never find or buy a 'better' set of drums.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing, Purdie. You could buy a dozen DW Collectors, Ludwig Legacys, or Gretsch USA Customs any day of the week with enough money. They're not making any more of these awesome drums, though, and they're some of the finest ever.

Cool cymbals, too!

Sell the drums and cymbals to someone who can appreciate them. Then you can buy a set of Pearl or DW or whatever. Maybe some shiny new Sabians.

Did you guys check out the Gladstone leg mounts on the floor tom? :D Those are 3-ply (Brooklyn factory) Jasper shells. Doesn't get much sweeter than that sound-wise.

Oh, and Mike, the Gretsch drums are likely from the early to mid 50s, definitely not 30s.

Man that is slick! Certainly think twice before selling those puppies. I have a 50's Gretsch 13,16,22 inch with the 3 ply shells and they sound soooo good!!! My favorite of all my kits.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Again, just said i was considering selling them, not sure if I can cut the family ties with the set. My "dream kit" is indeed a DW, far beyond what I can afford to spend on a drum set, which is why I considered selling these. That, and up until yesterday they were just sitting boxed up for the longest time. Makes me think along the lines of what Chicago Dave said...sell them to someone who can appreciate them

Many of us here would love to have that kit. Many of us can also afford just about any drum kit we want. I will echo what others have said. Your favorite current drum maker is always making new drums.

On the other hand the vintage drums are not being made anymore and there is no way to replicate the way the shells and drums have aged nicely over the years. In addition to that the wood and trees the drums were built from back then I am willing to bet are more than likely not around or not available to be cut down for use these days.

Even DW will go on the hunt for wood that for example was found at the bottom of a river and is already near a couple hundred years old. You just can't replicate what time has done.

If I had to decide on what to let go I would let go of my modern kits in a heart beat. At any given time there are at least a dozen of the same kits available with no wait. The same can't be said for my vintage kits.

Just my two cents!

Well in the event I do keep this, which is looking pretty likely, can you knowledgeable fellas do me these favors:

1)School me on this kit and cymbals...everything you know about it!

2) The heads on it were an awful choice, what could i skin it with to bring its true sound out? Remember, i'm poor.

3) Roughly, how many $'s is everything in those pictures worth to one of you collectors? I probably wont sell it for another kit, but i've lost my job once and nearly lost my house, not going through that again. Would be nice to know how much i'm sitting on.
