Recently "restored" Ludwig Pioneer. All parts are original or period correct except the heads and the snare throw-off. Haven't found a reasonably priced P-338 so I have installed a P-80 for the time being. Made an adapted plate so I didn't have to drill new holes in the shell. I have the original no-flange top hoop with the Ludwig Pioneer logo engraved on it. I haven't got the no-flange hoop for the snare side to match so I installed a pair of chrome plated 1920s single flanged hoops. I believe that Ludwig put the single flange hoops like these on the Pioneer in 1932, albeit with 8 lugs. Before / after pics and adapter close up pic are in the Restoring Vintage Drums section. Thanks to VDM members for providing some of the parts on this snare.

Sound: I haven't yet had a chance to hear it "in action". I put some old wire wound silk snares on for authenticity...they don't sound great. Before I actually play it I'll install modern snare wires. All I can say at this point is that it seems to have a "tight" sound without a lot of ring.

An adapter plate is exactly what I need for my 1920s NOB snare! The arm didn't come with the drum.
I'd be happy to fit a p80 if only the screw plate was flanged outwards!
Would it be possible to make a two-part adapter to fit around the centre bead?
I gave a lot of thought at one time to putting a P80 on a 1921 NOB snare I have, but I just couldn't come up with a workable design that I could make. The space between the inward turned mounting flanges is about the same as the width of the rib on the drum. I also considered a two piece arrangement, but each piece would be so small I didn't see how I could work with them. Perhaps a machine shop would have the tools/equipment to make something. I'm not saying it can't, or hasn't, been done...I just thought it was beyond my capabilities.

I just emailed Mike C, who said he has a friend with a jig to mod these throw-offs. There is hope for us!
