1920s L&L Brass Snare. Should I beat it out?

Loading...

Good day. I aquired this old 1920s (I think)Ludwig&Ludwig brass snare with 6 nickel tube lugs. It has 2 extra holes (as seen on the left side of the pic) where a tom mount had been added, which also crimped and cracked the bead. Is it worth beating out the dings and dents (no, NOT the crimped snare beds!) and restoring. It is missing the badge (though it has a rusty hoop stamp), the throw-off, butt plate, and bottom flangeless hoop. How hard will it be to find those parts? Thanks for the input! Inexpressive way to take dings and dent out of brass drum.

Buy a wood Dow roller cut it to the size of the drum, in cases like this that has a rib in drum, buy a 3/8 round steel rod and place in the slot as you roll bang out the dent or ding drum my have. Here are photo of what a Dow roller looks like for those that do not know what it is. All work should be done from inside the drum and on a flat surface

You might try the hammering inside a box of sand instead of on the bench, it will help you from flattening out the bead. Maybe...

if you do, i learned from a old beater, work around the outside of damage , then inward

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
