Hi,
I got these two sometime ago but never did an article so here goes.
1929- LUDWIG & LUDWIG 5 x 14 WHITE ENAMEL/DeLUXE SUPER-SENSITIVE MODEL
1925-29 LUDWIG & LUDWIG 6.5 x 14 WHITE ENAMEL/DeLUXE SUPER-LUDWIG MODEL
HISTORY: The Ludwig catalog offered the white enamel (and black enamel) option from the early 1920s into the 1930s. DeLuxe hardware is the copper plated/gold lacquered option; the other hardware finish options were gold plating, nickel plating, chrome plating (after 1929) and Classic Gold plating (1935-). Engraved bottom rims were from 1925 to 1929 +/-. The stamped bottom rims are from 1930 –.
The 5 x 14 shell was in rough shape and needed to be re-enameled. A local body shop was able to do the job much better than I could have. The DeLuxe hardware was in good shape so I left it as is.
The 6.5 x 14 was another story...the shell came to me wrapped in lime green glitter contact paper. This looked – as my good friend John Aldridge would say – “as ugly as home made soap”, and it was. It took a small career to remove the contact paper but I eventually succeeded. The shell also needed to be re-enameled from the same body shop and the outcome was very successful. The DeLuxe hardware was in good shape so I left it as is.
Enjoy!
