1920's Gretsch Drum Set. HELP! Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Loading...

Alright, so as far as vintage drums go I am completely clueless.

My grandma was out at a yard sale and some nice old man had this drum set and said has had it since it's purchase in the 1920's. I've tried to do some research on it to find value, type of drum set, etc. but have had no real luck.

The snare drum has been redone. Not entirely sure what all that includes, but it definitely looks a bit nicer than the rest. His neighbor in the 40's painted a pretty cool design onto the bass drum.

Sizes

Snare - 14x8

Tom 1 - 12x9

Tom 2 - 14x12.5

Bass - 27.5x13

I have absolutely no clue what to do with it. Please help!

Thank you so much!

If you have any questions about it, I'll answer to the best of my ability.

This is a Gretsch "Defender" set, made during WWII, when there was a national restriction on the use of metal.

As previously stated, its WWII vintage. Unfortunately, they are not practical as a playing kit, resulting in a limited market. Still in all, very cool from a historical perspective.

Awesome! That helps me out a lot.

Do you think it is worth going to get it worked on.

Or should I just sell it as is?

I have no use for it and selling it is the main goal for me.

Someone else will treasure this more than I will.

If I were in Virginia, I would be interested. However, the cost of cross county shipping would likely be prohibitive. It looks to be in pretty good shape for the pictures.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72
