Hi. I came across this rare 17" snare drum and am attempting to restore it. It appears that the top hoop actually belongs on the bottom. It also has two small holes drilled to the left of where the strainer mounts, between the top strainer mounting hole and the badge grommet hole, but there was nothing mounted there when it came into my possession. Does anyone know what belongs there? And, where might I find a top hoop and hooks for this? Any help more closely identifying the manufacture date would also be appreciated. So far, I have stripped three colors of paint off this and, since it is a pretty Maple shell, am applying a hand-rubbed clear coat to it.

nice find. that's gonna be a beautiful drum. I would guess that the two horizontal holes are for a drum key holder.

Digmon,

Not as rare as you might think. I have four 16" L&L Champion 16" parade snares similar to your snare. Primary differences between the two models are the hoops (wood vs metal) and the shell (Mahogany vs Maple), but configuration of the hardware is pretty much the same. Your maple shell should finish nicely, either stained or natural. The catalog page attached shows the key holder you need. I'll check to see if I have an extra one laying around. Also, I think I have a new 17" Fiberskyn still in the box. It's yours if I find it.

Digmon,

I don't have the key holder, but I did find the 17" Fiberskyn (new in the box). PM me with your address and I'll drop it in the mail. Just double check that the shell diameter is actually 17". The Triumphal model you have was available in a 12x17, but the 16" is more common. If your shell is actually a 17", I'm happy to finally find a home for this odd head.

Mike, that's great! I talked to a kid at Rupps Drums in Denver yesterday regarding parts for this drum. He asked me to email pics to him. I did so and, after several hours, he replied back that he and his co-workers were pretty sure it was a 16" because you can't order 17" heads (he didn't know that you can special order them from Remo). He asked me to send him a pic of the drum with a measuring tape showing the size. I did, and also included a pic ffrom the 1929 catalog showing this size available. Silly kids! :D

Maybe you were you the buyer? I wish you luck finding any remaining parts and that 17" single-flange batter hoop.

Nope, wasn't me. I got mine with 12 other drums for $25. Mostly marching band stuff. Any idea where to get rid of a late 70s Ludwig tom trio?
