18" Gretsch Bass Drum

Loading...

This is an early 80's Gretsch USA Custom bass drum. The size is 18x16 and was ordered with a Yamaha tom mount and bass drum spurs, as was pretty common at that time, as Gretsch hardware was considered less desirable by some drummers.

This IS NOT A CONVERTED FLOOR TOM.

The drum sounds killer and has that Great Gretsch Sound. The exterior walnut finish definitely has some scrapes, smudges and worn places where the lacquer has been bumped, scratched, swirls, checked, etc. One of the tension rods is a Ludwig, the others are Gretsch. The interior has some scrapes, missing paint, tape residue, splash mark from something being spilled, writing, etc. as well.

This is a players grade drum in a hard to find size. Use it to play as-is or re-wrap it to freshen up the look. If you are looking for a drum that looks brand new then this is not the one for you. If you are looking for a solid drum to play in a difficult to find size and can overlook the cosmetics, this could the drum that fulfills the vintage drum sound you are looking for.

The heads are used and very playable as-is. The batter head is worn and has lost some of its coating. There is a mole skin patch on it and some worn through areas. The reso head is in much better shape but does show signs of smudges and dirt.

It was purchased new and professionally played by a local gigging jazz drummer for 30+ years prior to my owning it.

18" vintage Gretsch Jazz bass drums are pretty rare and hard to find, so here is your opportunity to pick one up at a nice price. It has not been cleaned in a while and probably could use a good cleaning of the shell and hardware and waxing of the lacquer to bring back some of its luster. Everything works on it as you would expect

I am happy to send more pictures and/or Facetime you so you can see it "in person".

$850 + shipping.

Orangemi,

Thanks for the link. I would have preferred a pm. But, I had not seen that particular drum before. Odd placement, I believe on the Pratt. Are those Gretsch spur mounts and legs? They are different than ones I had seen previously, if I recall them correctly.

If my price is off, I am open to offers.

Yes, early 80's!

I must be thinking of one that seem "beefier". Thanks for the insight.

They did use a "beefier" and longer version on larger BDs that attached to the inside top of the shell to provide support for larger toms.

Never play it the same way once.

That is what I am thinking of. Thanks.
