18 Slingerland ft conversion

I picked this 18" Slingerland tom up a while back. It came without the bottom hoop. I understand that when it was bought new it could be easily switched over to a bass drum with a few extra pieces of hardware. I don't know if anyone is looking for one of these relatively scarce Slingerland Denim wrapped drums. If so, I'd be willing to sell it. If not I'm thinking of cutting it down to 10-12" and making it into a bass drum with nice wooded hoops - refinishing the drum of course. I have a modern Gretsch 18"x14" bass drum (my Champagne Sparkle kit) and I like the idea of the 10 or 12" deep bd too.

Anyone here with some advice one way or another in regards to cutting this drum down?

I usually just cut them in a table saw. Set the fence to required depth, then roll the shell through the blade, or slice it through repeatedly rotating between slices.

Not the most perfect way. It takes a bit of work to ensure it's 100% square before cutting the bearing edge.

For some reason my Android phone won't let me access your username to send you a pm. In the past 1/2 hr or so I've messaging back and forth with Ray Ayotte about this drum conversion. Depending how it looks re the conversion i will make a decision on keeping the drum to convert it or to sell it. I will let you know at that time on a price and ill send photos from my pc.

Some photos of the drum. I experimented using it as a bass drum when I got the drum last year. I didn't have the factory parts so I improvised using Gretsch parts - hoop etc. It comes with 4 leg supports and you use two of them when converting to a bass drum.

Gary got your email but was unable to return one. It just kept bouncing back? Thanks for the info. But a bit much for me to take on at the moment. If things change let me know. She's a cool big girl in 18" though. Like Mark said I'd try to sell it before she goes on a diet. All the best, Glenn.
