16" floor tom hell

Loading...

So here's my dilemma. I picked up a 16" floor tom off ebay. It's to round out an old stencil kit. So far so good. The drum fits new 16 heads just fine. The trouble is, one of the rims is too small to accept a new head, the other fits just fine. And they are both in round.

Anyone have a brilliant idea to remedy things?

The catch is, the rims are 7 hole!!!

My mistake not catching it up front, but what the hell.

What kind of heads are you using?

I'll bet its the Aquarian giving you fit problems.....am I close? x-mas3

Actually it's both, they have the same hoop size. To big by about 1/8 - 3/16".

Well....earlier you said it was just one.....Aquarian can give fitment issues due to the size of the hoops on the heads. Remo not usually as bad with fitment problems. What you need is a head with a thin hoop to it. You could try Attack's Jeff Ocheltree heads, they have a thin hoop as do Ludwig's weathermaster heads and some of the import Gretsch heads from the Catalina series, if Remo won't fit either.

Either that or "tweak" the rims a bit......

Yes it is just one of the rims that is undersize. Heads fit the second rim fine.

I tried forcing the head in place, but there's no way. I'll have to take it to the store and try some I guess.

You could get a 16" single-flange rim (I think they are available???) and a few small claws and solve it that way. Or, you could get a wooden 16" tom tom hoop and some Ayotte-style claws and solve it that way -but probably wouldn't be too cost effective. Food for thought if the search for different heads fails.

I thought of the single flange, but the cost is more than I paid for the drum. Hopefully I can find a head with a thin hoop.
