Looking at this picture of my Ludwig Butcher Block Floor Tom. Would you believe this was originally a 16 X 14 Concert tom with small lugs.

I'm not posting this to brag about myself but I am amazed how well it turned out.

I had to temporarely borrow hoops and heads from one of my other kits to make sure everything fit. To my surprise everything fit and went to together perfectly. Have no idea what it sounds like yet. I live in an apartment and, well I don't have to explain to everyone here the problems that would arrive If I started to play it.

More pics below.

Thanks goes out to gaskeg for selling me this Concert tom as well as the 14 X 10 Concert I got from him to. They both match the 22 X 14 kick drum I just finished assembling.

The first thing I did when I got this shell remove the old finish on the inside. The finish came off so easily I couldn't believe it. All I took was a metal scraper and dragged it accross the inside of the shell. what was coming off looked like Potato chip crumbs.

Once the finish was gone and the inside down to bare wood I moved onto plugging the bottom lug whole. I could have let it and used small lugs but to me It wouldn't have looked right. At first I used wood dowels but they wouldn't stay in cause I couldn't get enough glue on them to hold them in. So went to those small wood plugs that you use to hide screw heads. I put one plug in on the outside and flushed it with the wrap. I figured you'll never see with the The lug covering it. Then I put another plug on the inside and comressed the 2 together. Once the glue had dried I cut with a small hand saw the excess plug that was sticking out then sanded it to the contour of the inside shell. Unfortunately as you can see the plugs don't match the inside shell. I have never been able to find MAPLE plugs or dowels.

For the clip mount holes I used poplar dowels. As you can see they are a little closer match to the inside of the shell.

Once that was done I 120 and 220 the inside of the shell removing any left over finish. Then I applied 4 coats of semi-gloss varathane, Sanding inbetween coats.

After letting the shell sit for a couple of weeks I took it to UDRUM The Under Ground Drum Co. where owner and founder Paul Dickinson cut brand new 45 degree baring edges.

Once that was done I took it home and started mapping it out for 16 Large classic lugs, 3 floor tom legs mounts which are drilled in the iproper places, and also a peroid correct tone control. I don't use the Tone Control but I figured it will make it look more authentic.

And there you have it. The only thing I'm disappointed in is the Badge. When I was installing the Air grommet with one of those compression tools the wrench I was using slipped and started to rub up against the badge, damaging it. Of course I didn't notice until the grommet was completely compressed in. So I had to drill it out wasting a grommet. I'm hoping I can find a new badge with a serial # 165XXXX. If not I will leave it. I also wish I was able to match up the pieces of wrap better I used to plug the clip mount holes on the outside. All I had was pieces of this fake BB drum wrap and one small piece of real BB inlay. Again nobody's going to see it when it's on stage.
