I sought out this forum initially to find the best ways to clean and restore my drums. Drums done, now it's cymbal time.
Sometimes maybe ignorance IS bliss...lol
I bought these 15" hi-hats used from Manny's in NYC in 1965. I can't imagine I would have spent more that $50 at that time for them.
Anyway, I found by reading on this forum that Bar Keepers Friend is probably the way to go to clean them.
I ALSO learned (through the efforts of posters like Drumaholic) that they look (to me) like they have trans stamps. Weights? 935g lower, 885g upper. The question is----Do I dare?
I don't ever plan on selling them BTW.
They have been cleaned in the distant past, probably with either Brasso Never-Dull or Noxon, I don't recall which I used, if not all. That was long before I became educated in these matters. They, along with my 22" & two 18's spent all of 1971 with me on a destroyer in the South Pacific. Playing on the deck of a destroyer is probably not a healthy environment for them, so I kept them polished up to avoid corrosion. (You think YOU played a big room, no echo in mid Pacific...lol)
My gut feeling is "go ahead and make 'em shine"
But will I be breaking any laws?
Is it a mortal sin? or a lesser one?
Or, should I let them keep their accumulated grunge?
Looks matter, but sound matters more.
