13" Zildjian Hi-hats

Loading...

I bought at a flea market, what was even then (27 years ago) an old set of Zildjian hi-hats. Here's what I know:

1) 13" set

2) Both top and bottom are same weight

3) Medium thins by my estimate (They were thinner than a New Beat top cymbal, but definitely not a thin.)

4) Istanbul stamped

5) Machined cymbals, not hand hammered

I used these puppies for several years. Nice tight, crisp choke as well as slush. After I replaced them with 14" Sabian Regular hats, I turned one into a splash that uses the third hole on my Yammie tom mount on my kick drum.

Any ideas as to what this is?

Pictures would help, but if they're Zildjians and have "Istanbul" in the stamp they would be hand hammered K Zildjians made in Turkey. A very nice set to have!

My bad. I was incorrect on the markings. They are actually made in U.S.A. I used to have an orginal K Zildjian that was stamped "Constantinople," but that 15" cymbal has since expired.

The full markings are:

Turkish writing

AVEDIS ZILDJIAN CO.

GENUINE

TURKISH CYMBALS

MADE IN U.S.A.

Here is the one I have out. The other, but identical cymbal is stored away.

You can bring them to the post office and weigh them. That will give you an idea of what they may be. Post a pic of the stamp, preferable on both if you can get to the other one easily, and we can tell you what era they're from. Drumaholic can probably give you some good info on them.

The one I have out weighs in at 1 lb., 9.05 oz. I will get the other one out and weigh it later, but they at least appear to be identical.

So a 13" A Zildjian at 25.05 oz., or 710.155 grams.

Two more things that may help to date it:

1) Under the Arabic writing and before the English type stamp, there appears to be two small dots followed by two dashes.

2) The height of the stamp from the top of the Arabic to the bottom of the type is 1-1/4 inches.

That sounds about like a medium thin weight.

A lot of stamps have the dots and dashes. Does it have 3 dots in a triangular pattern in the somewhat U-shaped mark directly above the dots and dashes?

I wrote to Zildjian about them but still haven't heard back.

There appear to be no other incidental dots in a U shape about the three dots and two dashes.
