Do any of you play 12" deep bass drums and if so why? Are they louder, punchy, etc.

Thanks

I used to play a Ludwig Jazzette, which had a 12x18 bass drum. It was pretty punchy compared to a later 14x18 and 16x18 that I used to have.

Yes, I have four kits with 12" deep bass drums. They are harder to play than deeper bass drums because the response is so quick and bouncy. You almost have to have the technique down to play them. Whenever I play someone else's deeper bass drum, it feels a LOT easier to play. I don't have to get the beater off the head as fast.

Plus, I think they look cooler! I can't stand the look and sound of extended depth bass drums.

I have a 12X28" , the batter head needs something hard against it as it got a lot of bounce, lucky it's got an internal muffler

Interesting, how do they sound? Would you be sacrificing the low end?

Why do you want to know? :-)

I have played a 12" downbeat for 4 years. It playes very well, has good low end but doesnt carry that well playing un-amplified. Miced, it does the same as 18" deep kicks if ya ask me.

I am thinking about getting one. I have a weekly gig on a real small stage and I could use all the room I can get. I have no mics so I am wanting a louder kick.

I have a a WFL 12 x 22, which was advertised as a 14" when I got it, but I've been really happy with it. I personally haven't noticed a huge difference in playability but I think it is punchier. I don't think you really lose much bottom if any.

I use a 12x20 on situations just like this, or for rehearsals. My main kick is a 14x24, but the little 20 is surprisingly punchy, with some nice low end. It is a Blaemire though, so I wouldn't expect anything less.;)

Yes, well, the diameter does have a lot to do with the playability, too. All my 12" deep bass drums are 18" diameter or smaller. I do have a 22 X 10 bass drum that is a completely different creature than any of my 18" shallow bass drums. What diameter are you interested in, Lucky?
