12 Lug COB Slingerland 5x14 Snare Hoop Question

Loading...

So I've been lucky enough to find a 12 lug chrome over brass 3-liner 5x14 shell with holes for a TDR throw.

As far a I could tell from the catalog pages, there was only one year this was made...1979 making it a model 203 Spitfire.

Now my question is, the hoops for this drum....would they be COB also for this year? Or would the bey COS?

Another question is about the strainer. Could I use a TDR strainer and butt plate for gut snares to put wire snares on? Is there a difference between TDR strainer for gut snares and wire snares?

Thanks ahead of time for answers to my first post!

The rims should be steel, forget the gut snares!!! go get a pair of 20 strand puresound snare wires, it will knock your door down!!:DKeep on Pl

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Your 12 lug 1979 Spitfire would have had COS (Chrome Over Steel) hoops...

Thank you all so much for your responses. I'm currently working on finding all the right hardware. Got the top hoop, lugs, throw.

Need a 12 lug COS (chrome over steel) snare side hoop and TDR butt....

Anyone?

wild i have the same drum from '78(?) or '79. i am looking for top / bottom hoops now after a (year-long) loan on this drum ended up w/ warped hoops -- i guess the kid did not know the correct tuning method w/ the 12-point star deal. i may have a hoop/hardware source at fortunedrums.com, i will post here if so. Dale F. there has amazing hardware connections.

is there any online catalog you can link to about the model 203 Spitfire ?

best,

Geoff

Thanks for the reply.

I got the info here :

From what I could tell, it's the only year for the 5" COB 12-lug.

What serial number do you have on your snare... my tag is gone (Violin)

And do you have steel hoops on your's too? TDR too?

wow, thanks for the link...that is IT, beautiful. love the radio kings available that year as well . solid maple w/ those old-school hoops.

the 12-lug snare went with the 1st kit (silver sparkle) i bought w/ my own $$$ that year. like an idiot, i sold the kit in Miami (via that main bald guy at resurrection drums) in the late 80s to a collector to pay for a jazz-size premier kit. glad i held onto the snare. the kit was pristine & i still miss the wide open, maple sound & wood smell. at least i have it on a vinyl record from a jazz band competition thing in mechanics hall in MA. big sound in there.

my serial number is 423000 or 413000 i think, i will get it for you & some pics if that helps. i think the hoops are steel. the classic triple flange "stick saver / eater" variety that curve inward.

Very COOL!

Could you check with a magnet to see if the hoops are steel? Can't wait to see pics!

Is it a TDR throw? It must be, right?

totally jazzed on this drum right now - i ASSumed it was steel all these years & didn't know it was COB. hoops are indeed steel (thx for magnet detail) & was a bit off on serial # which is 455478. i will have pics online here in about an hour. same throw seen at the far left/top of this image (where middle seam of catalog would be):

my issue was when i tuned it up, the bottom head broke. i figured it was the bottom hoop which seems to look fine now that it is off. could be the old warped snare-side head (i hope)? more later...

here are a few shots i just took of the drum (including the magnet / hoop test!). one nutty thing is how the factory created the snare bed at both ends of the bottom with a (hyraulic press?) bend. 2 of the shots show that. i remember having a WTF moment years ago until i realized that was by design:

i guess my next steps are new lugs / plastic gaskets, new snares (i believe i still have the original) and new heads.
