Smile Need help! Restoring a Ludwig Bronze Snare
I have a late 70's early 80s Ludwig PHOSPHOR BRONZE Supraphonic Snare Drum Smooth Shell 14X6.5 that needs major restoring and I can t find a vendor that can restore it to original condition.

I can get the replacement parts like the hoops, lugs etc. but the bronze needs stripping, polishing and finish by an expert that can work on it and leave it like new.

If anyone knows of a company that can help I will be more than grateful.

to the forum! Are there any shops that restore vintage cars or motorcycles near? They would have the tools. Wish you success!

Cuco - Look for a metal shop that does plating! They'll be able to chemically strip the shell, then polish it up like new. Shouldn't cost more than $100 for strip and polish.

to VDF!

One thing to consider. These early blue olive badge bronze shell drums can bring a premium as they are pretty desirable. Most any stripping process is going to require removal of the badge/grommet. This will impact the value of the drum significantly. That may or may not matter to you. Just something to think about.

+1. Are you planning on selling it? If so you may want to rethink the"restoration" and let the buyer make that decision.

Seems I remember someone that had theirs (hammered version) stripped on a wheel with a rouge compound and relacquered to get rid of oxidation under the lacquer. It might have been Tommy if I remember correctly, but I can't seem to find the thread. I'm gonna need more coffee before I scroll back more than 10 pages in a search....

I would leave it alone. Just clean and polish the best you can. Let the vintage character and mojo show!
