Ludwig P-82 Throw-Off Replacement
Please, I'm trying to restore a Ludwig 6 1/2 incher snare drum with a Rocker P-82 throw-off ( 2 5/8 inch hole spacing). I just don't like the throw-off. To me (only an opinion), it seems difficult to fine tune. Are there any good quality alternatives out there? I've tried researching, but have come up with nothing. Thank you.

Re: Ludwig P-82 Throw-Off Replacement
Brian,
Any thoughts on making an adaptor plate so you could mount a P85? Cheers

Re: Ludwig P-82 Throw-Off Replacement
I built several drums this winter and used the Indie brand throw offs. Their hole spacing is adjustable so they work as a replacement strainer without drilling more holes. I like their adjustments. Not cheap but well worth the cost.

Thanks, Rod and Pedal_Pusher for the great ideas! I'll definitely look into both suggestions today. Appreciate the input, guys!

Re: Ludwig P-82 Throw-Off Replacement
Hi Brian!
You are correct about the P82 requiring a 2-5/8" hole spacing. However, the Inde strainer only goes to 2.5". You'd have to modify the holes in the shell to accommodate the strainer. -Mark |

Re: Ludwig P-82 Throw-Off Replacement
Thanks, Mark, you're right. I thought so, but wasn't positive. I did a bit of googling this morning and sure enough, the INDe throw-off only extends to 2 1/2 inches. Hmm...

Re: Ludwig P-82 Throw-Off Replacement
Why Ludwig would go with such an odd spacing is beyond me! Maybe a marketing decision to keep people from using a P83/P85/P88?
What about the P82 do you not like? Looking at pictures of this strainer, it reminds me of some Tama strainers. Maybe it's just the rubber knob and throw? It looks like a reasonable strainer to me. Maybe a new one would work better? I see them over at Drums On Sale for less than $17. -Mark |

Re: Ludwig P-82 Throw-Off Replacement
Brian,
Let us know what you decide to do about the strainer. I completely get it about just not liking it! It's also possible that you can lengthen the upper hole with a small round file. Leave the lower hole alone. It wouldn't take too much to modify that upper hole and use either the Inde or Ludwig strainer of your choice. I'm partial to the P88, but the Inde is really nice, too! -Mark |
