Early 60`s Pre-serial Acro-phonic? or Supra-Lite? or what?

Hi Guys!

After being "collecting" (gathered) Ludwig stuff for more than a decade, I feel for the first time a bit "clueless" about a Luddy Snare. Help2 Help2Mind BlowiMind Blowi

This rare (I guess this term could fit properly in this particular case) snare came to my hands, after a low-ball offer (Price was at the ball-park of a 60´s Acro, near two bills)

After watching thoroughly pics for more than ten times.... I took the risk!

I didn't received it yet, but I would like to overtake some pics of this baby.

My research locates the snare on 1961-62.

In those years, many changes were made on metal Ludwig snares, as:

1. Round-knob muffler was replaced by the P4067 (baseball bat red felt)

2. Other alternatives metals research due to the rising prices of brass (in this case Aluminium, among Steel, etc.)

3. K pre-serial badges were "slightly bent" in the middle (to prevent "snagging")

4. "Crimped" Snare beds on metal snares, etc etc...

All these characteristics appears clearly this snare.

The main point is, the shell, wich is "Raw" Aluminium, and it appears to be FACTORY issue, and this would appear to be not "buffed" or "de-chrome"....

BTW, it have ten imperial lugs as you may see on pics, and brass hoops...

Also, badge&grommet looks like been all in position....

I dunno, really :o..... Pls guys, give me some light on it.

I apologize ahead of time if I am wrong (and I am sure someone will let me know) but wouldn't this be a NYC school board 10 lug Acrolite from the 60s? There would probably be a stamp inside to that effect. I'm just guessing...could be a prototype. Whatever it is it has got my attention! Nice find!

Hi FP! Thanks for your input. Cool Dude It could be a possibility, at least one clue.

However, as far as I know, those babes were made during early 70s with B/O badge, maybe I'm wrong, I dunno.

NYC school Acros, etc were produced during the keystone badge period, I had a 6.5 x 14 version.

will be interesting to see exactly what it is when it arrives to you. as mentioned earlier, there are some 10 lug acros that were made in the 60's. ive got one in 6.5 depth and in 5 inch depth. the 6.5 is more common than the 5. the ones that I have run across have bowtie lugs though. mine also does not have crimped beds. the acrolites of that period are actually anodized and not raw even though they appear to be raw. nice drum no matter what it is.

As far as I've heard the NYC drums were all 6.5" depth.

You may have a transitional shell from the early days of the acro. They seemed to be trying various things. If a Supra 10 lug shell was accidentally anodized they would have simply finished it off with ten lugs rather than discard it. The bowties and imperials share the same hole pattern so it isn't a big deal to see them swapped out, either by a previous owner, or sometimes by Ludwig if they were perhaps running low on notched bowties that day.

The point that sounds weird to me is, the fact that all pre-serial Acros -as far as I know- were "Orange Peel" ones, basically because they were launched during 1963, same year Ludwig started to stamped serial numbers on badges, so, a ´61 or ´62 "Raw(anodized) Smooth" Shell, will locate on the "rare-prototype-whatever" category.

Well, time will tell all of us the truth.

ko did mention something that I should have. my 10 ten 5" model is not a nyc school drum. it was special ordered by a Ludwig dealer for a customer.

heraldo-they did make pre serial acros that had the conventional smooth finish. ive got one that has crimped beds and ive also seen them without the crimped beds.
