Hi folks, I'm wondering if the 2000 wood snare is essentially the same drum as the Royal Ace but with an updated strainer. I did some research and couldn't find the info.

Is the 2000 also 3 ply Birch with Beech re-rings? Any other differences?

the wood version of the 2000 is I believe the 2001.
There is a white one on reverb right now and yes looks like Birch w/rings

the Royal Ace (name) belonged to an earlier era ; different (art deco) strainer design strainer throw off; earlier hoops..
that name was pretty much dropped when the (this) revamped drum set version became 2000 (might have still lingered with in trad parade drums)

2000- 5x14 alum shell
2001- wood 5.5
2003- 6.5 metal
2011- 4 x 14 metal
and there's others

2007-6.5 brass shell orchestral wire set up

with Premier you have two demarcation era
pre-international/ and International.
International began hmm late middish 70? early 71..+/-
I had a Sept. 1971 full set new and was all International. 2000 snare , still had 390 holders (dagger referred to) and the 8x14 (pancake) mounted second tom)

I bought this thinking it was a Royal Ace. I should have done more research first. I read about the grooved strainer being a indicator of the R.A. and this one has the smooth version. Perhaps I overpaid but no big deal.

The shell looks like mahogany to the naked eye but I had also read that they did some sort of treatment to the wood on the 2000 wood models so I thought maybe that chemical darkened the wood. Everything I had read seemed to indicate that Premier used birch pretty much exclusively on their snares in this period but now I see that they did, in fact, made some of these from mahogany.

So now, I'm guessing this is mahogany with beech RR's.

That’s a sharp kit. I’ll have to read up on the international vs pre-international topic. I appreciate the help.

Definitely a Mahogany shell. They were birch in the 60s, switched to mahogany sometime in late 60s or early 70s and then back to birch around '76 so it would be in that time frame.



The metal 2000 and the wood shelled 2001, which is what you have, and wood shelled 2002 first show up in the '68 catalog so between '68 and '75.



I don't have access to a '67 catalog, and there might not have even been one so that is as close as you can determine when they were introduced. The opening paragraph in the '68 catalog makes it sound like the 2000 snares were new for that year but without a catalog for '67 it's hard to say with 100% certainty.


The 14" snares were always the same as our 14" shells so no problem fitting heads.
