Default [B]1936-39 LUDWIG 6.5 x 14 “BUTTERSCOTCH PEARL” (uncatalogued) SUPER-LUDWIG MODEL [/B

Hi,
Here’s one from the past that I haven’t done an article on yet. This drum came to me from my very good friend Tony Lewis (RIP).

1936-39 LUDWIG 6.5 x 14 “BUTTERSCOTCH PEARL” (uncatalogued) SUPER-LUDWIG MODEL

A WORD ABOUT “BUTTERSCOTCH PEARL”:
This seems to be an uncatalogued finish as it is nowhere to be found -- that I know of -- in any Ludwig literature. I have seen 1 or 2 other Ludwig Butterscotch Pearl snares and I also own a Duplex Spirit of St. Louis in this finish so I personally know that this finish exists. So my best guess is that this is an uncatalogued or special order finish. As always I welcome any other information that may be out there regarding this finish.

THE SHELL:
The finish is in very good condition and there are no dings or extra holes. The white enamel badge is clean with a tight grommet. There is no interior date stamp but it’s safe to say that this drum was manufactured between 1936-1939.

THE HARDWARE:
The nickel hardware is in very good shape and cleaned up/polished up nicely. The Imperial lugs have inserts.

Enjoy!

Nice finish! I wish they still made 'em like they used to!

I own, and have seen, a fair amount of "Butterscotch" drums.
The finish is browner than the drum shown here.
The top line drums are found in one outfit, 26-15-11 and a standard snare, not a super.
Some lower level cheaper drums were wrapped in the finish too.
And, all the drums were made in late 1941 and early 1942, or post WW2.
This drum appears to be yellowed WMP?

If it was yellowed WMP, then the yellowing should be inconsistent under the lugs, etc. That would be the first thing to check.

I don't know if this drum pictured is "yellowed" WMP, but I'm pretty sure it's not what we call Butterscotch, unless the color in the pic is tinted or altered?

All I can think of is that maybe the butterscotch wrap was somewhat transparent and so when it was wrapped around a shell that had a lighter maple outer ply, the wrap would register as a lighter shade of butterscotch than if it were to be applied to a shell that had a darker mahogany outer ply...? I guess we will have to wait for Mike to give us some more information.
