I have one of these. It's a fantastic drum!
Anyway I've seen it done before, but why do you do that with the tape across the top head? How does the thin folds affect the dampening?

Great drum. I have one myself, I run Remo coated emperor on top ambassadors on bottom. steel puresound wires.
