Hello all

I own a 1970 Ludwig kit and was hoping to find more information on it.

I have located a couple of serial numbers on the some of the drums below blue/olive badges. These are: 995493 and 1036175.

I have uploaded some pictures here.

I'm looking to find out anything on the kit really; what type of Ludwig kit it is, when it was made, what it is worth etc.

I purchased it in the Brighton, UK, about 15 years ago and am looking to get it renovated/sold (together with the Le Blond cases). The previous owner told me that it was Michael McBrain's first drum kit (although he offered no proof so I am naturally very sceptical!), but it has done a lot of touring over the years, and so I expect it does have a good history behind it! Anyway, I didn't realise I had purchased a vintage drum kit back then, so this is all new to me!

Toms- 10" and 13"

Floor tom- 16"

Bass- 22"

There is another Premier tom but I appreciate this is from much later.

I think the kit was originally yellow (and later painted black).

Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks. Let me know if you more information is needed.

Not sure, but they look like they might of been painted black. I would take a lug off and see what is under there.

Look to be 3 ply clear int blue and oval badge started 69 3 ply era finished 1976 bd spurs look original tom holder is not original,if there are extra holes it is a players kit, condition is pretty rough as it sits,in the States just the ludwig drums 500.00 max.

If Eddie Ryan restored the Ludwig drums at some point I am sure that sound great but if the bearing edges have been redone again that makes it a players kit.

That old kit looks like it is a true road warrior, looks like it served admirably, the stories it could tell if it could only talk.

Hi Mr.!

Definitely a 1970 3 ply (maple-poplar-maple) w/ re-rings Classic Ludwig.

Re-painted for sure, looks original B/O (blue-olive) badges-grommets though.

Unfortunately, tom holder it's not original, and some extra holes must be there waiting for you.....

Should be a great sounding kit anyway !

If I was you, I'd spend some time-money to put it in condition again..

Good luck!!!

Why do you describe this as a 1970 kit? Do you have history on the drums from prior owners? I would suspect that it is a year or two newer than 1970 based upon the serial numbers and the style of badge.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

The serial #'s in Rob Cooks's Ludwig Book book place them in '76, though I think there is an updated list somewhere.

They are clear interiors 3-ply w/ re-rings and that is a plus

You 're right Sr... My fault.

Mi intention was "..early 70's, instead 70"

Sorry, don't beat me up!

Not really directed at you. The original poster said 1970 and might have some history that supports that year.

Thanks all for your comments -really helpful. I'm going to bring this kit back to its former glory. I'll post pictures once it's refurbished!

Thanks again.
