Re: Do You Use Vintage Hardware for Gigs?

At some point in time...70's mostly...everything started to become overbuilt. That was the trend. Kits started to get punished by heavy hitting, showy types...kinda part of the show that was...

Re: Do You Use Vintage Hardware for Gigs?

I retired a few years ago, but I have gigged with vintage hardware before. It worked fine and actually was a pleasure when it came time to pack up -especially the Ludwig hi-hat and SpeedKing. It's...

Re: Ludwig Acrolite drum set and Slingerland copied them

Can someone post the corresponding catalog listings for both the Slingerland Jet and the Ludwig Jazzette, please? I don't dare try it, myself! ;)

Yes, Slingerland and Ludwig were always at each...

Re: 2007 craviotto drums/ak drums custom snare drums

Yeah, I remember these when they appeared. I think Steve Maxwell talked about them a few times. Nice drums....especially for student use!

Re: Rogers Drums

I think that's the reflection of the bass drum lugs, jmcohen. I thought I posted this answer to you last night but my response didn't show up for some reason.

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

Maybe sound SHOULD be number one, but, when the trend became boutique snare drums, back in the day, it was inevitable that there would be artist/craftsman to take it to extremes. I would have never...

Yes. A collector would like those, I think. :)

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

No problem, Tommy. I'm just frustrated and embarrassed that I can't figure these things out, myself. It's easy when the site does it for me. LOL! Oh well...back to rubbing two sticks together to get...

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

Drums as tools should be designed with practicality in mind. Wall hangers and photography models can be less practical.

Lots of guys back then were building JUST snare drums. No one had those huge...

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

@latzanimal...Do tell!

Actually...yeah...What was it? Something about him taking money for orders and then not coming through with the goods... I kinda remember something. All I know is that I...

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

Sorry about that. I guess I just assumed the new software would be the kind that allowed a user to post a pic and have the program resize it. I know it's not an issue at many other sites I post on...

Re: Ply overlap in 70s Ludwig shells?

Ludwig and other 3-ply shell companies of that era kinda took a "the drum is a hollow log" approach to making shells. If you could get a head onto it and crank it down, then it was good to go.
I...

Dang! I was hoping the new software would auto-size the picture. My apologies.

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

Beautiful looking drum. Wow! The problem I have with really exotic and beautiful drums like that is that I'd be afraid to go to work with it and accidentally scratch it.

And yes, I know lots of...

Re: Ply overlap in 70s Ludwig shells?

If you DO get them re-edged, then make sure you find a competent entity to do the job. Precision Drum Company comes to mind.

As far as Ludwig's quality control...It varied. When the early 70's...

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

I'm probably just being an old fuddy-duddy, but, when I was young, I just took it for granted that I would always have access to quality manufactured products. I didn't think about any of it. Buying...

Re: Ply overlap in 70s Ludwig shells?

Sorry about those drums, man. I feel partly responsible for choosing that kit, as a favorite, out of the three kits you showed the other day.

That is the infamous Ludwig lump....VERY common among...

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

Just as an anecdote....I was watching a YouTube video by a guy I am following for homesteading advice. Like me, he used to buy/wear only Levi's 501, shrink-to-fit, button-front jeans and Levi's jeans...

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

And then we arrive back at the point....which is that the reason that American made drums and kits are so desirable is partly due to the fact that no manufacturer can afford to do what they used to...

Re: Late-70 (78?) Ludwig with 3 ply?

This is why it's very important to provide us with detailed pictures before making your purchase. The badge and mangled grommets are a dead giveaway that there has been skulduggery involved. Of the...

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

I'm very well aware of the fact that all these people outsource their materials. In fact, my entire reason for not having any desire for modern drums is that. I don't care WHY they do it. Clearly,...

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

Well, I'm sure they are nice drums. There are a few companies that made it through the plethora of drum "manufacturing" around the turn of the millennium and remained in business.
A problem that I...

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

Yeah, if I had a dime for every time I read that line then I'd be able to buy a Gretsch round badge bop kit! :) Seriously, I'm not trying to single them out, but they can say anything they want about...

Re: C&C: how do they compare?

They look like one of the many boutique drum bands that were so popular a couple decades ago. They are obviously modern drums. The hardware looks pretty generic. Personally, I would never invest in...
