Re: Identifying Ludwig Standard ply woods

Interesting! ^^^ The only part of the shell to come in direct contact with the head (because of the rounder profile) is the poplar core, though. Either one of the veneer woods would add about the...

Re: Identifying Ludwig Standard ply woods

Yeah, in a blindfold test, it would be hard to differentiate whether or not the veneers around the poplar core, were maple or mahogany. I think I could pick out a Gretsch jazz kit from any other...

Re: Identifying Ludwig Standard ply woods

It's called "reverse engineering"....meaning that, back in those days, as you say, no one cared about things like the wood or the rims, etc. We just picked the brand of drums we liked. Sometimes, we...

Re: Anyone remember the Gretsch Birdland kit that was discovered....

Just got a reply

Thanks for reaching out. I was the manager of Steve's store when we had the Caddy Green 20/12/14/sn with gold hardware, all the old K's, books, and timbales. The kit was on...

Re: Mystery Cymbal, help needed.

Interesting looking hi-hat cymbals as well...Also pictured with a vintage Trixon kit. I've never seen any cymbals with Romanian spelling on them before. At first, I thought they might be...

Re: Anyone remember the Gretsch Birdland kit that was discovered....

To be honest, I've never even looked at his website until lately -trying to find out if he knew anything. But, yeah, I noticed that the site looked pretty outdated and kinda hard to navigate (for...

Re: Anyone remember the Gretsch Birdland kit that was discovered....

Well, after sending two emails to "vintagedrums@aol.com" about the Gretsch kit in question, I haven't gotten a response. It's possible that he (Steve Maxwell) does have the kit I'm referring...

Re: Anyone remember the Gretsch Birdland kit that was discovered....

And the one I saw Steve Maxwell show wasn't the one, either...but I'll bet he knows the one I mean. I read somewhere that he has three of these kits (which doesn't surprise me). I had no idea finding...

Re: Anyone remember the Gretsch Birdland kit that was discovered....

Nope...none of these kits resembles the one I remember. The one I remember was drop dead immaculate perfect and all the gold was there and no scratches on the shells....drop dead gorgeous mint. This...

Re: Anyone remember the Gretsch Birdland kit that was discovered....

I'm not sure without the background provenance story in the description. I had no idea there were even twelve of these kits. I thought there was maybe just this one I'm referring to. I clearly...

Re: Anyone remember the Gretsch Birdland kit that was discovered....

Yeah, it kind of caused a stir in the vintage drum community, so I'm sure someone will chime in on it...eventually. I'm going to try and Google it a few more times to see if I can pin it down.

Re: Clown vomit/frog-in-a-blender past and present

Mike,
The old stuff looks very classic -even with the terrible nicknames. The newer versions are just too bright and "plastic" looking for my taste. Your collection is beyond incredible, though....

Re: Repaired cymbals

Depends on the cymbal. Depends on the "repair". I've seen older K Zildjians that had edges that looked like they had been chewed by large animals -and they sounded great. Bill Stewart plays one or...

Re: Serious Hearing Loss

Lots of us have suffered hearing loss to one degree to another....part of the game, in my opinion. I know plenty of non-drummers who also have lost a lot of their hearing. Getting older is a b---ch....
