Re: Mystery Duplex Key

Thanks. Yep, it's based on clock key style. I think that drummers way back when (early 1900's) would try to use clock keys, for instance, on square tension rod heads. It fits some modern tension...

Question Mystery Duplex Key

Anyone know anything about this Duplex drum key, such as age? (see pix) I've not come across any other picture of this key before.

Does it predate the Ludwig & Ludwig "Mickey Mouse" key?

All...

Re: Does Anyone Know What Make This Drum Key Is?

THAT's a great question! I haven't figured that part out yet. Suggestions?

A related problem - although I've figured out what key to tune it with, it's hard to figure out what "key" to tune it...

Re: Does Anyone Know What Make This Drum Key Is?

Or maybe it's a drum key for 19th century British drums, tension rods? I have one of these too. The tension rod was invented in the UK around 1837, so I've read.

Drum Keys / Wrenches Wanted!

I'm always on the hunt for good deals on drum keys / drum wrenches to add to my approx 300 key/wrench collection (plus many various new and vintage duplicates)... looking for interesting keys (except...

Re: clamp on spurs

yes, thanks, these are very helpful. It looks like the legs in my Ludwig drum are mounted the reverse of yours (the clamp part is the same mounting, orientation though). I'll try changing mine

Re: clamp on spurs

Well, a good suggestion.... but,,, (having just now expanded the sample), I've tried them on bass drums with 18", 20", 22" and 24" diameters... No progress. The angle is the same on all, which is to...

Re: clamp on spurs

Vintagemore2000 - I was wondering if you might be able to post a close up of your gold bass drum's let mount(s) so I can see the part where it attaches to the shell? (to see if the style matches...

Re: clamp on spurs

Yes, you're both right; now I see what you're referring to on the factory legs (the direction the legs are inserted into the fixture on the shell). This weekend I'll take them apart and adjust...

Re: clamp on spurs

Mikey - Thanks. Actually, the spurs on my WMP bass are ok - that's the front hoop in my photo - the factory spurs are mounted same as the gold bass drum. (I think the photo may be confusing, but I...

Re: clamp on spurs

Yes, in fact, all of the above has been done. In some rooms, the "professional" manufactured drum rug I use and gig with does not prevent old-timey spikes from making sharp contact with what may be...

Re: clamp on spurs

Sorry for any confusion generated...

My goal is to better stabilize and support the bass drum. The built-in spurs are a bit loose and wobble some and don't fully tighten as I'd like. My thought...

Re: clamp on spurs

Thanks; yes the WMP bass is mine - recently acquired and not yet gone through the cleaning/touch up process. The built-in spurs seem to be the same type on both our drums... I'm diggin' how the...

Re: clamp on spurs

Sorta Yes - in the sense that that looks to be the same kind of folding spur that is mounted on my drum originally (although the bass drum model itself is different than the one in your photo - mine...

Re: clamp on spurs

I'd love to find out what the story is with this design! Meanwhile, looks like I'll have to find another set of spurs that can do the job. Any thoughts, recommendations, sources on that score would...

Re: clamp on spurs

It is a puzzle! And, whatever their intended purpose, the pair of spurs is in beautiful condition, well manufactured.

Also - I briefly chatted with someone at Ludwig customer support earlier this...

Re: clamp on spurs

I bought them as a pair, and they're mirror images of each other (left and right). I've tried reversing on the other side of the hoop, for both batter and resonant hoops. Still is a mystery!

Are...

Re: clamp on spurs

Good thought... But... I just tried it that way, and it didn't really work that well... the angle was still not right, and the support was weak.

As a comparison, look closely at the clamp on bass...

Re: clamp on spurs

Hi - here's the photos of the Ludwig spurs. I'll be curious about your opinions as to their design. They seem incorrectly angled. Interestingly, the logos are similar style, but different size. On...
