Zildjian K Istanbul 16"

From MastroSnare

Was I the only one that thought the rivet holes looked large... like twice as big as normal?

If no wear is evident around the edges of those holes, then those holes weren't for rivets. And although I can't see them close enough to say for sure, it looks to me like there isn't any.

Here is macro picture of one hole.

What was meaning of holes, if those weren´t for rivets?

Good question. The only reason I know for those holes being there are for rivets. My gut is that they were and somebody either drilled them a little too large or enlarged existing ones for some reason.

My 1950's 16" K sizzle is about a near a sibling to yours as I expect you could find, and I'm not sure if mine was drilled by the factory or a customer. Out of interest, the approx 5/32 in holes in mine are about 2 3/32" from the edge of the cymbal (measured to the center of the drilled hole to the cymbal edge).

It shouldn't be a factor except for someone who cares more about looks and resale value than sound. When I buy a K, it's for life. I could care less if they have livable cracks, notches cut out of them or whatever, I actually look for bust up ones because those often are the best ones, or at least the price will be low because of the "defects".

In this cymbal holes are 56 millimeters = 2.20472441 inch measured to the center of the drilled hole to the cymbal edge.

Who knows why ?....could'a been rivet holes and a couple developed cracks so someone widened a few ~ then thought it looked stupid ~ so widened the rest...or they may have just been put there for some other reason.

I'd imagine it has no effect on the sound...but IMHO it IS a bit of a bummer....I mean, in the least, they could have been equally spaced all around. I hate it when folks cannot even pull that off, and you see it all the time with post-factory drill jobs....

Duh....line up the FIRST hole with the CENTER hole, and that tells you where to put the hole opposite it ! Soap Box

I dunno if it could fetch $400 really...$300 certainly, $325 up maybe.....

Nevertheless, considering it as a throw-in included with a kit, that's a nice find....

Those are very good guesses! :)

In a way that is exactly the type of cymbal I'm drawn to because:

1) it's the right brand, vintage and size

2) somebody saved me a few hundred bucks by drilling the wrong size holes in it

3) I can use it as a sizzle if I want and if it didn't have the holes I'd never bring myself to drill them

4) high possibility of sounding great

So then, no wear marks.

Just as I thought.....ventillation holes. You know? So the cymbal can "breathe".

But seriously folks....

Some "old timers" used to drilled holes like that in an attempt to dry a cymbal out a bit. Maybe that's what it is. Like you see here on this 22" old stamp K.
