Zildjian High & Low Boy Chinas - Info Request

Hey all,

I remember seeing or reading somewhere a long time ago that the "Boy" was dropped off the name of these china cymbals because of a possible derogatory slur and potential lawsuits...The newer cymbals just have "China High" or "Low" on the logo...

I own a few of these great sounding china cymbals in different sizes and wish to broaden my knowledge about them...

Any info regarding them would be appreciated...

Cheers

Somebody call me? I don't have much, but I happened to come across this which may help:

https://www.pearldrummersforum.com/showthread.php?205263-Zildjian-K-China-Boy-year

while I was following up Drumaholic's apparent claim that IAK (Intermediate American K) 17" Chinas don't exist in this thread:

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=51599

From blairndrums

17" Intermediate K Zil China

From Drumaholic
Just for your information there is no such thing.

As happens sometimes, I don't know whether Drumaholic is objecting to
the use of the word Intermediate because he doesn't believe IAKs should be called that,

"Intermediate" must only be used together with the full qualifiers "American K",

they weren't available in 17",

he has read the original post as if it had an "Istanbul" or "Turkish" or "Old K" in there

the word Boy needed to be on Blair's description.
Drumaholic's terse answer doesn't make his particular objection clear to me. But it did seem to be a conversation stopper in that thread.

That's about all I can help you with. I haven't got to the part of my timeline yet which would cover individual models from that era. And I haven't vetted any of information from that Pearl Drummer's thread against any other sources. So it is all read and evaluate the weight of evidence for yourself. I just stored the URL away for future reference when I get to individual models and which years they were available.

You might do just as well using Google to look up search terms. That's how I stumbled on the PearlDrummers thread in the first place.

I sold Neil Finn a Prototype 17" EAK China around 4 years ago...

I believe he hits it in the video....TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT...by Pajama Club...a side project with wifey/others...

I recall it being hit at around the 20-30 sec mark....it was one of the best China's I have ever had..if not THEE best....and I have had a few!

Thanks for the link, Zenstat...It was an informative read...My chinas are Avedis and not K`s...I`m guessing the same timeline would apply???

I appreciate the help...

I'm always learning but I'll share what I know for what it's worth.

I grew up in the 80's so far remember these well. I always thought they were a bit too refined for a China cymbal. I have been using a Wuhan since 87 or so.

The first version of these (about mid 80's) had "boy" and the high and low version. I was not a K player back then so my knowledge there is even less. Either before, or at the same time they started adding "Avedis" to the ink but well before the laser logo they dropped the boy. About the same time frame they had the red inked "Oriental" version with some Chinese script added. Shortly after that(maybe same time) the EFX cymbals came out. That was early-mid 90's I think. I have an EFX piggyback I played on an 18" crash ride for several years.

Maybe that helps?

Thanks J!m. The years all do seem to be lining up.

I don't know specifically about the China models, but my Avedis Timeline has current best estimate years for when the Avedis was added above the Zildjian (1992):

http://black.net.nz/avedis/avedis-gallery.html#SolidInkAvedis

and the first year for laser serials (1994):

http://black.net.nz/avedis/avedis-gallery.html#laser

So if the Avedis above the Zildjian is also true of the Chinas, then yours is pre 1992.

There aren't any specific years within the 1980s which are marked by ink changes in my timeline, although there are some years associated with specific models (like the Earth Ride and EAKs). But the other thing you might like to check grantro is whether or not yours has the CO stamp:

description: http://black.net.nz/avedis/avedis-gallery.html#CO

Again, this won't give a specific year (we don't have a specific year for when it appeared yet) but it is an interesting piece of extra data I'd like to know.
