once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
Howdy, Zildjian and several drum and cymbal companies import (or did at one time) the "Chao" gongs as pictured from Wu Han province in China. There are lots of sources for these types of gongs and also "lion" cymbals that are generally referred to as China cymbals. I recommend that you check out Steve Weiss Music for gongs. You may also be interested in larger diameter "wind" gongs (without the turned edges). Thanks, Joe
I remember when we toured the Ludwig plant in the mid 70's they had a huge gong in their office area. Bill Ludwig Jr. tapped it a bit for us but didn't really play it. He said they only did that for momentous sales reports or things like that. It was like the one pictured here at the flea market only huge (seems like it was 8 feet across although that may be an exaggeration of my memory). Possibly tagged as a Paiste but also maybe actually made in China and merely imported by them. I wonder if the Ludwig company still has it or, otherwise, where it ended up.
Given Dick Schory's connection with Ludwig I've often wondered if this might be that same gong?
