Zildjian 24" ride....age? value?

Loading...

G'day from Down Under (Australia)

I recently came across a big 24" Zildjian ride cymbal at a flea market in Sydney, and knowing it had some value I picked it up for not too much.

I believe it may be a 50s or 60s model, am I correct?

It weighs 1850 grams.

It's in good condition, no cracks or dents, just a bit of tape marks on the underside. (See attached photos.)

Can someone with good knowledge inform me of its age and an idea of its current US value?

I will probably sell it here in Australia, altho I'm open to overseas offers (but the shipping would be expensive!)

Yours in the rhythm,

Seth in Oz

I think it's late 60's. Are you sure about the weight? It's 1850 or 2850g? Depending the weight and the shipping costs I can be interested , I'm from Spain . Thank you .

Appears to be a 60's cymbal to me as well. Even 2850 is considered thin for an Avedis 24. 1850 would be mind blowingly thin. Nice find!

G'day from across the ditch Seth. Welcome

It has the die stamp of the 1960s and the production clues (lathing and visible hammering) of the 1960s. I don't know why jmoll says late 60s. Could be, but I don't see either of the clues I know about which might indicate later rather than earlier 1960s. But then I'm still learning. Read more:

That weight is crazy low, as Mike and jmoll point out. Here are the weights of 24" Avedis Zildjians I've recorded in my database and what they sold for (USD):

3886 $280.69

3830 $295.00

3100 $300.00

2882 $300.00

3175 $349.00

4222 $350.00

3835 $375.00

3140 $385.00

3150 $400.00

3540 $450.00

2930 $550.00

3830 $550.00

2786 $1,149.00 <== this one is an exceptionally fine 1950s one and doesn't tell you much about the likely value of yours.

The expected median price is $380, but you really need to double check that rogue weight. Yes shipping from Australia will be hugely expensive for a cymbal of that diameter. As best I can tell from my research, the market for quality vintage used cymbals in Australia is much like New Zealand. Almost not existent. You might be able to reach your target audience on Gumtree or Australian eBay and get your target price. But it can be tricky to find the right person, and you might need to wait for some time to sell it locally.

Wow, is it really as bad in Australia as in New Zealand? Maybe because it's a 24" it might go ok as it's less common than the smaller sizes.

It's funny how old American drums fetch a premium in this part of the world but old cymbals can usually be bought cheaper here than in the States

Okay folks, many thanks for all that good info.

I DID make a major mistake on the cymbal's weight tho (our kitchen scale wasn't set to grams - d'oh!). The actual weight seems to be 3430 grams, which makes much more sense as it's NOT a light cymbal!

So given Steve's estimations, the value is probably around the $350-$380 (USD) mark, yes?

I can check out the shipping costs from Australia if anyone out there is interested in considering purchasing it for within that sort of price range?

Big thanks for all of your rapid, knowledgable replies to my original post.

The international brotherhood (and sisterhood) of drumming is awesome!
