Zildjian 22 K ride

Loading...

Hi,

I just got myself a used Zildjian 22 K ride. Now Im trying to find out what type of ride it is exactly, because al logo's and prints are removed ;)

Considering the stamp (K Zildjian, made in USA), no serial and the machined hammering I think it is an IAK also called Pre Serial K.

Based on the (minimal) leftovers from the prints + the length of the print I know it is a ..... RIDE. Just wondering what text was on the dots.

The ride also has 7 holes for sizzles, but Im not shure if these are factory holes or customised by previous owners. (I guess the second option)

The weigth is about 2640 gr.

Is there anybody out here who can help me out finding de type of this ride?

Regards,

Albert Jan

How is your Japanese? I've really just put this in so you can check out the pictures of hammering, etc. You can translate it in google translate, but your don't get idiomatic English.

This price list from 1983 (via the comments in Rob Scott -- and you have to scroll down)

shows there were

JAZZ RIDE

and

CRASH RIDE

and

RIDE

although the series may have added another model later. So my best guess is JAZZ. But then I've never paid much attention to Zildjians which came out of the factory with ink on. Missing Ink questions do seem to be appearing at the moment as you can see from another recent thread:

Yesterday I took my "new" 14 inch zildjian hihats to a gig and they are awesome!

Now I would like to know how old these ones are and Im not really familiar with the stamps. I posted an attachment. To me it looks like 60's but I find it hard to find the differences between 50's and 60's stamps, what are the differences?

Any ideas?

That appears to be a 1960s stamp. I'm not the expert (Bill Hartrick aka Drumaholic is) but I've recently taken the position we need better documented info so we don't get asked the same question over and over again. These are the attributes I am looking at:

Presence of "the three dots".

The stamp is well formed and clear.

The font for the Ottoman (squiggly) part of the stamp and the ZILDJIAN Co. is in bold relative to the other English text.

The vertical alignment of the H of TURKISH over the E of Made. The 70s stamp shows both lack of that alignment and lack of the bold for ZILDJIAN Co. and the Ottoman portion of the stamp. The 70s stamp also lacks the 3 dots, which is what seems to confuse people between late 50s and 70s.

So an annotated pictorial:

late 50s (aka "small stamp")

which has the alignment, the bold, but no 3 dots. Note that it says "font weight" in that annotation but I found that confused people so I'm now calling it just bold.

60s (actually early 60s because there is also a late 60s)

which has the alignment and the bold, doesn't have the three dots

70s (although in the late 70s there are others)

with lack of alignment and lack of bold and lack of 3 dots and often not pressed in as well as the 50s.

This is a little toolkit for recognizing these three decades from pictures only. There are other differences in hammering, lathing, bell shape, and heights of the stamps. But you needs hands on to make those observations.

And there are lots of other stamps. Here's the man himself:
