Your worst buying/selling experience

Loading...

Another thread got me thinking about some of the crappy experiences I have had buying and selling drums. I have three, but the worst has to be one that I bought. I bought a mid 60's Roger's Holiday drum set in champagne sparkle. The kit was in above average shape and I felt like I got a decent deal. The seller and I agreed on a price for the kit and a price to ship ($125). When the seller got to the UPS/Fed Ex/USPS store he calls me to tell me that it is going to be a lot more than the $125 to ship and that he is going to need more money, or he will cancel the deal. I asked him to send me a picture of the receipt. He does and it is for around $186. I agree, send the extra money and wait patiently for my drums. Fast forward four or five days. I come home from work one day and I see a big, ugly, two-boxes taped together type of Frankenstein looking thing on my porch. Oh Boy. My first thought is that I have no idea how Fed Ex/UPS/USPS ever accepted this monstrosity. I new I was in trouble when I attempted to pick up the awkward shaped thing. I kept hearing . . rattle, rattle, rattle, crunch, snap crackle and POP. Once I unfurled the mess the damage was heart wrenching. This guy merely placed naked drums inside a box with no packaging. The snare was severely damaged, the floor tom had gouges out of it, the tom was damaged the most. After I cried for a little bit I made a phone call to the seller who actually answered. Here is a paraphrase of the awkward conversation. Me: Give me back my frigging money. Him: I already spent it. He claimed that he took out insurance on it but that gave me no solace because the shipping company would have simply refunded him the money. Also, the shipping company wanted to inspect the package. Um .. .. .there is no way the would have ever paid him back. The seller actually asked me to help him out by packaging it better so he could file a claim. Yes, you read that right. So what's a guy to do? Ship it back to him (on my dime) and demand a refund through Paypal? I managed to convince him to refund me $100 and I sold it to a local guy for parts and only lost about $200 or so bucks. Please share yours.

I've been burned twice now most recently by JOSH FRY and HACKSAW DRUMS. The first burn was on eBay when a seller sold an out of round drum with peeling ply issues that weren't revealed. EBay made it right however. My recent post may have got you to thinking.

JOSH FRY AND HACKSAW DRUMS are disreputable.

This seller is an out and out chump. I bought A 13" Radio King tom from him knowing of the hole issues. He removed the top head prior to shipping to tell me one of the tom lugs likely would need to be replaced since a fastening screw was sheared off inside one of the fasteners. Good on him for that. What HE DIDN'T reveal was upon removing the head an overwhelming mold smell permeates the air. The shell had major water damage and the 2nd of 3 plys is ROTTED. He refuses to accept the shell back and return my money although he is offering a "discount" The shell is trashed and he won't take it back. I also purchased some vintage hardware from him to be used in a photo shoot. He GUARANTEED me it would arrive in time. IT DID NOT until two days after what we agreed upon. So now I am stuck with hardware I couldn't use for the purpose I intended and again, HE WILL NOT REFUND MY MONEY. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS KID. He is trading money for his reputation. His name is Josh Fry and his email is Hacksawdrums@gmail.com...HACKSAW IS RIGHT.

This thread should get interesting.

I guess I'm lucky having had no problems. I once purchase stereo speakers from someone who just placed them in a cardboard board and mailed them.

I had a seller here in NC this was 20 years ago. We both know each other I bought a complete Radio King kit from him 2 weeks later I call him asking was he going to ship them or what? he replied I will get them out next week. I live a 6 hour round trip drive from him, This was Monday I told him put them in a box and ship them. a week later no drums, So I called him again same reply. I told him don't bother I'll be in Raleigh this weekend I'll just pick them up, He agrees on a time the following Saturday, I arrive in Raleigh no answer from him until the following Monday, I was livid by this time, His reply was well we never agreed on a time WTF?? I had a private detective friend of mine do a back ground check on him and I found out he's been arrested and served time for **** dealing. I told Him Joe refund all my money NOW !! He stated man I'll ship them right now, I can't relay my words as they are to rough for most ears. The drums showed up in 3 hours at my house.

I have been very, very, very... lucky.

My one bad deal involved a guy named Jonas. The problem wasn't the item, it was getting the item.

I, too, have been very, very lucky!

Ploughman, that name Jonas seems very familiar. By chance, does he sell on eBay? If so, I believe I know who you are talking about.

My worst is continuing. Not a purchase per say, but a member on another forum said he needed to make emergency sale for family issue. I email, and ended up sending him money (didn't need any of his sale items) to make the trip as he was not able to make the sales needed. He accepted my paypal payment, emailed and promised to contact me when he returned. Of course I have never heard from him again. He is still on that forum. Will not answer phone (still his voice on message), private email, forum email, forum pm, Facebook messages (several different where he is active), letter - all ignored totally.

I found a guy on rec.musicmakers.percussion (it was a while back) selling a 22" UFIP Class Series ride cymbal. We agreed on a price and I sent him a postal money order. After that I didn't hear anything from him for 10-14 days. Finally he said A) he had been gone for training and B) he lost the money order. He told me to cancel the first money order and send him another one. I go to the post office to cancel the first money order and get a replacement, amazingly enough, he has cashed the money order.

Finally I hear back saying he found the money order and he would get the cymbal ready to ship. After a couple weeks of no cymbal and no response from him I start to think this guy might not be trustworthly. On top of that he's in the Air Force at some base down south. He's using his usaf.mil email address to rip me off. I was able to find the name of the base XO and tell him one of the members of his command is using a USAF communications system to commit mail fraud.

I don't remember hearing back from the guy but the cymbal showed up about a week later.
