Richard manuel played drums with The Band as well. he normally played piano and sang some lead and the high harmonies. there are some you tube videos in which he was shown playing the drums. I think Levon would play guitar in this situation.

there used to be a video of rag mama rag in which rchard played drums. I can't seem to find it right now. here is one of the same song in which they both played drums..

Mike is 100% correct! With the one small exception that Levon would pick up and play a mandolin, (not a guitar) for Rag Mama Rag.

mandolin does seem right. I first thought banjo but that didn't seem correct.

That's one of my favorite tunes from those guys. I got to hear them live at a reunuion tour they did with Robbie Robertson in the late 90's. They were playing for free on the pier at the South Street Seaport Museum downtown Manhattan. Mike, nobody showed up! It was unbelievable to me that a band that could fill Madison Square Garden any time only had a crowd of a couple hundred people. I managed to get around the barricades and position myself about 20 feet away from Levon. He caught me gawking at him a couple of times while he was playing and he threw me a couple of smiles. I think he knew I was a drummer taking it all in. He must have at least ten drummers in the audience at every gig trying to get the best viewing position. I'm sure I wasn't the first. It was a total gas. They sounded great as is their usual. Excellent show.

I was listening to the song whispering pines the other day and just could not stop listening to it. Richard Manuel sang it in falsetto and did it right. I then saw a you tube video of Jakob Dylan doing the song. come to find out there was a tribute album done in 2007 for the 30th anniversary of the last waltz. the lp has 17 songs by some great artists covering the band's music. I picked up a copy on ebay that arrived yesterday. I guess I was in a fog in 2007 or something. never even heard of it being made...
