Who Inspired Us?

This is a bit off normal topic, and I will accept if the moderator has to overrule its display. We often exchange information regarding Buddy Rich's drums and about him as a player. One thing that is surely true of his legacy is that he inspired a lot of drummers to excel to very high heights in their careers.

Steve Smith is undoubtedly one of those drummers, and this video shows the kind of technical, musical development and achievement that Buddy displayed and inspired. The amount of serious work it would take to reach this level of performance is clear, and it must surely be the case that Buddy had inspired him. This performance would have given Buddy a Big Swing Face smile:

Got to admit I was a little bored after a minute or two, but glad I stuck around because I have never seen anyone play with one stick and two hands before. Steve is amazing for sure, I would say as a young lad Phil Ehart was my inspirational drummer and still is but lately I have been listening close to Max Weinburg.

You're right Jeff, I should have noted that you have to stick with it (no pun intended).

That was my feeling Mark. Blown away. When he had the stick going through his left set of fingers, my jaw dropped. Overall though, super-duper showmanship, chops and rudiments. The fans got some serious value for money.

Double PS - Do you note that he wasn't even fatigued as he came out of solo and back into the tune. The guy is 63 years of age and looked as if he was totally relaxed. Talk about fitness!

I saw him play with Journey years ago at MSG and sat there with my mouth open. Since then when he focused on his "jazz preference" I would sit and watch some of his videos even more amazed. This one is make me feel like an anaconda . . . my jaw is on the floor.

And yes Dan . . . Us Old Guys Rule !

Great video of SS...

I've got usual list of who's-who like Bonham, Pace, Powell, and especially Simon Phillips - but probably my greatest drum influence was a "big-time" local drummer named Brian O'Brien (last name is a stage name) that played on the local LA/OC club circuit in the mid-/late '70's through the mid-80's. Brian undoubtedly influenced a lot of folks in So Cal to be sure, with his look, swagger, showmanship and "ease" of playing!

Michael Schenker probably had the greatest musical influence on me - I just think he is such an incredible guitarist... I've always dreamed of the drum chair in a band with him leading the show!

EDIT: I just recalled that Brian's band, A La Carte, opened up for an earlier version Journey way back when, great show!!!
