From mbettis

I used to gig my Zildjian 26 and a 30. The 30 was fun, but required an extra, dedicated, two-handed trip to the car.The 26 I now use as part of my backing plate system when I'm lathing the undersides of the 26's I make. She does not dig that role, but it's important.Later,Matt

Haha, I know what you mean! I love playing the 30", I took it to a practice with this folk/country band I was with and they told me not to bring it back! Guitar players just don't understand...

Playing... or owning? Because I do own a 26" paiste forumula 602 ride, but don't play it that much. It's just a little... too much.

It has a very pleasant sound, but actually seems to be intended for softer playing (seems contradictory!). When you lay into it, it builds up with some weird overtones which are hard to control. When playing subtly, it sounds beautiful, but due to its size, it blends not that well with other cymbals. So a difficult cymbal to use!

BUT, while I don't play in any big band (would love to some day), I can imagine it is a perfect cymbal for that job! Light playing, but still very noticeable in the mix...

ps: FYI, i read somewhere Joey Castillo used a 26" 602 when recording "lullabies for paralyse" with queens of the stone age. Maybe it's just me, still having to learn to master the cymbal!

Here's the link where I read about Joey Castillo's 26". He borrowed it from Mick Fleetwood! Thought it was a cool story to share...

My mid-50's 22 was always a "wall of wash" that drowned out even my preferred nylon tips.

I saw (and almost bought) a 24 recently but have never even seen (that I know of) anything larger.

Anyway, for those inclined, I had my 22 over-hammered by Justin Ottaviano after I explained the problem. Once he evaluated it and said "I wouldn't take any weight out if it- it's perfect- a 22" crash cymbal!" So he "adjusted" it and now the wash is under control, it is slightly darker and it does indeed crash spectacularly as a giant crash would.

(This 22 was my very first cymbal, bought second hand in 78 or 79 I guess by my dad for me- never, ever for sale. But I couldn't play it. Now I love it. Please don't hate me for "modifying" a vintage cymbal. Justin also signed the underside of the bell.)

Here's a video I shot for a local band, drummer using 26" ride or maybe it was bigger, can't remember. Couple of nice vintage kits too, Slingerland and Rogers. *I am not playing in this video* just shot and edited it. It's just MiniDV but came out nice enough....

Mitch, I really like the sound of that ride, thanks for sharing!

Here is another video, where you can see mick fleetwood 'using' his 26". It is the big cymbal tot his left (!) of his hihat. Judging from this gig, it was there more as a statement than that he really used it...

*edit: he *did* use it, you can see him crash-riding on it at 52:30.*
