I believe Premiers also had connecting lugs on some drums. Yes, the Ludwigs "where" very good.

Premier had those lugs on BD,mounted toms, but on the FT's, split lugs...

Hmmmm

kind of odd...

I found a kit on CL but the BD does not match the tom & FT. The BD has the connecting lugs while the tom & FT do not. So not a complete kit. Are the shells the same? It's very clean but this non matching drums stuff drives me nuts. The shells all match finish wise though.

Slingerland used the "connected" lugs then as well....and no, those Ludwig drums are horrible. Just give them too me and I'll get rid of them for you :p

I heard that the mach lugs were used on marching drums initially,The heavy one piece lugs could take the strain from high tension off the shell.

I do not know if the mach style lugs were offered on 6 ply shells,or could be special ordered, but they were catalogued as early as 1973,and I like the look personally, probably make the drums a little heavier.

Ludwig started these lugs on the marching drums bass, snares, toms.Ludwig did offer only two of these sets some say 1973 but i have been told 1974 to mid 1976.In the Ludwig catalog it shows they made a 4 pc and 5 pce.You could have traded out the 22" bass drum to a 24" bass. The 4 pc set could have been one of these set-ups 22,13,16 or a 20.12,14 [these sets are rare in these sizes].The 5 pc set was 22,12,13,16If you went with the 24" bass you could have traded out the 12" to make the set 13,14,16 you could also trade out the 16" tom for a 18" tom.Again these bigger size sets are rare to fine.....Oh all sets came with a S.S. snare drum.....Mikey

That a piece together set.Ludwig sets on these sets all lugs would match..Check the inside of the shells they should be 3 ply clear....Mikey

That style of lug was available on 6-ply shells on marching drums, but if I remember correctly the use of those lugs on sets was discontinued when they changed over to 6-ply shells as it just wasn't very popular.

I remember when they were pushing those sets (early-to-mid 70s), you could get (from Ludwig) a gold-colored name plate that said "Custon Designed For" and then your name engraved...
