What to look for when buying 70’s Ludwig Vistalite kit

Loading...

Hello everyone.

I am about to embark on a hunt for some vistalite kits locally. I never had an acrylic kit so I am unsure on what to look for other than the typical cracks.

The kit I am seeing it’s apparently a 70’s clear kit. Two high toms and one floor tom with a matching snare.

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated it.

That's not an original Ludwig mount and I would assume there are extra holes. That lowers the value and depending on the skill of the installer it could damage the shell. That's about all I can contribute.

Thank you for your input. I appreciate it. I will be looking for any additional holes.

As an owner and player of a Vistalite kit, I'd say also check roundness of shells and bearing edges. My floor tom has pretty bad bearing edges and is pretty out-of-round. I still play it, and no one notices but me (and I worked hard at getting it to sound decent), but that's something you'll want to know about.

Thank you dharma bum. Are these drums more susceptible to being out of round due to them being made of acrylic?

I also saw some of the pictures the seller sent me and there’s two tiny holes on the bass drum rim and the tom arm that holds both toms it’s missing.

Ok...So I pulled the trigger and I am happy to report that the drums are in very good condition.

I was concerned with scratches, extra holes, out of round or cracks. But the scratches are very minimal, no extra holes, they are round and I can only fine a super small hair line crack behind one of the tom lugs. Maybe 2mm.

It is missing some parts though. One of the chrome washers underneath the tom mount. The original tom mounts are missing, as mentioned before. The tom mount arm and the hardware to hold it in place. The inlay for the bass drum hoops.

Also, some of the bass drum claws seem to be different. I'll have to dig around to find out if they are original or not.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the progress so far of the cleaning and polishing. I'll keep you posted on the progress as I go.

First picture is when i first set them in my house. The snare was inside the house at the time.

What is your go to shop for Ludwig parts? eBay seems kinda hit and miss.
