What the.....resonance killer!

Loading...

Yesterday I decided to do what I'd planned since my original purchase in September 09-cut down the "hair band"mounted toms on my 89 Rockstars to a reasonable depth. Not hard since they have no rerings. So,in order to continue practicing I mounted some Royce/Pearls in their place.Very different tone,to be sure-Eagles comes to mind. But heres the strange part. When I added a cymbal arm and 16" crash to the tom stand-any vestage of resonance on the 12 DISAPPEARED-instant blanket. What does adding a cymbal arm to a STAND have to do with the drums resonance....this arm was mounted at least 8" below the drum itself and was nowhere NEAR touching the drum.Took it off-resonance returns.

You may ask yourself, why bother with 89 Rockstars? They are the only year(I know of,anyway)with seperate,Sonor Champion style lugs and are MIJ-not MIT.Nice birch interior ply and little to no voids in the plys.

Ok I think I got this one......the extra weight of the cymbal arm and cymbal behind the drums forces the stand to balance backwards a bit. At the same time the tom arms are forcing up a bit putting extra stress on the toms shells. The shell gets slightly tweaked, killing all your resonance. I have something of this issue with all my drums as I don't use RIMS mounts or anything similar. Try repositioning the way the drums hang......believe it or not it helps. If you can angle them in such a way that the shell isn't stressing as much and still be able to play them comfortably, the resonance should return.

Like I said, the downward weight on one side causes an upward force on the other......simple physics really.....
