What Should I Know About Fiberglass Drums?

Loading...

I've been considering a kit, but have NO idea what fiberglass-shelled drums sound like. No shop I know has them in stock and no one I know has a set or even a snare. I know that companies like Fibes and Tempus made among the most known, with Tama, Pearl, and Yamaha all having a go at some point. I believe the only drums I ever heard live was Bermuda Schwartz's IMPACT kits, and he has since switched to Ludwig.

I keep hearing the word LOUD, but I'm not sure what that means in relation to tone. I also hear that the shells are impervious to weather(obviously the hardware wouldn't be).

What are the ins and outs of owning such a kit? I'm strictly a maple/birch/oak kinda guy; what about the Pearl wood/fiberglass drums as well?

Thanks for your help.

Hi I own a 70s Fibes fibreglass kit with the matching snare. I like it alot, it is fun to play. Can't say I have alot of knowledge on the specifics of Fibreglass.

They do project but are full and controlled...meaning no wierd overtones...at least to my ears. They have a nice feel too.

Hope this helps, thanks
