what kind of heads do you like on steel snare drums?

I know what I prefer to hear for wood snares, but I haven't done much exploring with steel shell snares. What's your preferred combination for batter and snare side?

Also, any one ever use calfskin on steel? Just curious.

Thanks all.

I like Remo clear P/S on top..Bottom Ludwig X-thin on bottom...I have in the pass used calfskin heads on bottoms and tops...They sound good/ok but not the best...Kind of a good sound for blue's-jazz type of music...Mikey

When I bought my Dunnett stainless steel snare back in 2000 it came with an Aquarian Double Thin coated head. That head sounds great. The bottom was just an extra thin clear Aquarian head. The Double Thin was thin enough to still get a fast rebound and response but still get a crisp tone. It appears they do not make them anymore and I had a hard time getting them for a while so I gave up and went back to Coated Ambassadors. It looks like the Texture Coated Response 2 has taken its place on their website. It doesn't show how thick the plies are. Double thins were really thin plies that when together were alittle bit thicker than a medium Ambassador weight head.
