What kind of cymbal am I looking for??

Loading...

the sound I'm hearing in my head is like a combo of a dark crash, and a very dark-sounding China-type. I want something really trashy and dark, with some characteristics of a conventional crash. Mainly I want the sustain that typical crashes offer, which still having a sound similar to, but not exactly like a China.

Anyone seen or heard something like this??

Current gigging set:
Recent Ludwig Accent 13/16/18/26, (in Silver Sparkle), "updated" 70's Acrolite with cast batter hoop and Trick strainer/butt

Cymbals:
Zildjian K Custom Ride, Dream (Bliss and Contact) crashes and hats, and a Sabian Swish/China.

Other stuff:
60's Ludwig Champagne Sparkle "Traveler's Club Date", under construction. Click Here
70's Acrolite (under RE-construction)
Two 1960's mahogany 32" Ludwig bass drums with Imperial lugs.

Actually, there are quite a few cymbals that fill that bill.

The first is made by Sabian. It's called a Rocktagon crash. I would suggest the 18 or 20 inch size. I've had several of these over the years and they are excellent. If you search carefully, you can find a custom one that was hand hammered. I've seen a few sold by Memphis Drum Shop. They were good, BUT not as good as the regular ones. Sabian will make these for you new, if you choose.

The second is made by Dream. It's called the Bliss series. I would suggest something in the 19 to the 22 inch size. These are outstanding in regard to your specifics.

The third is the first run of Wuhan crashes. The 18 and 19 crash are particularly sweet. Stay away from the newer ones. Yuck.

There are a few others, but they are cost prohibitive when you consider these options.

Try a Pang....I use one as a ride for practice and have been considering taking it to gigs as a 2nd ride.

They're trashy, crashy, somewhat gongy like a china and a very different sounding ride. A lot of older big band guys had them.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

mcjnic did an awsome job listing practicly all of those types of pies that you described, but here's a few more that pop up in my head (the costly one's lol):

An here's some demo's of those cymbals he listed

Also you might consider making something yourself, if money's a problem (I know it is with me!), and if you have the tools. Say, like this:

Anyway, never mind the some what crappy vids, but it kinda gives you an idea..right? Anyway, hope this helps.

All the best,

I just looked around, based on the suggestions...

Dream makes a model called the Pang. Cheap, too... Hmm...

I could never have cymbals that close together, they`d all hit each other...... !! There is such a thing as overkill !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

I did see some nice examples from the Big 3 today at a local Mom 'N Pop music store.

The Sabian Ozones sounded really nice, as did the Zildjian A Custom equivalents, which are the the A Custom EFX cymbals. They have holes in them, although in different sizes and patterns than the Ozones. Very cool sounding. They sounded differently, but both lines were very much along the lines that I was thinking of. I think I preferred the Zildjians, but it was a close match-up.

The bigger ones, like the 18" sizes were my faves. Big and breath-y sounding.

My only concern is volume. I'd like to have something like that that'll compete with the Z Customs I use now.

I *will* be putting together a second set of "normal" cymbals, since the Z Customs are pretty single-purposed, and I won't be able to use them outside of very loud rock situations (like I'm in now). The A Customs would fit in nicely with the next setup, but for now... Hmm...

Of course, I still haven't tried out the various Pangs yet. The guy did say that he'd spoken with a rep from Dream cymbals. Apparently the guy is ex-Zildjian. He CAN NOT get them. The rep said he's been unable to get a shipment for months, so...who knows when I'll actually get to hear one. :(

Found a clip, they're all over youtube. It's basicly a reverse bell china, so I don't know if it's the sound you're looking for. But I know it's hard to tell without playing them, anyway here they are, hope it helps.
