What qualifies something as being a vintage item. In the drum world, I see 80's drums being marketed as vintage and I do not see it that way. Is an 84 Ford F150 a vintage truck? Is Top Gun, 1985 was the year of release, a vintage movie now? I say no and no and was just wondering if there was some sort of cut off as to when drums are no longer just older but rather, the much more sexier sounding, vintage drums.

The string and orchestral industry, along with piano's manufactures, have decided their cutoff points along time ago, and the time line's they have set determine the actually pricing of a certain era instrument etc,, I collect vintage guitars and amps also so i tend to use the guide line the guitar industry uses as a guide for vintage considerations on drums, Now to my personal opinion for drums 1980 is my cutoff point,but to my mind that is the limit on calling a drum vintage,Yes SirCool1
Depends on how old you are,...is it still being made today.....is it a limited edition......is it in demand.....is it all original?...etc etc..My answer is its up to you to determine the meaning of vintage,we all have our own ideas on it....Good topic!!
When used as a noun vintage is really a term that defines the class of a dated object with reference to era of production or use: a drum could be of last year's vintage.

So your Ford truck is a truck of 80's vintage... mine was vintage 1976 before it suffered an unfortunate fate. Dang. 4x4 F100 360 motor 4 speed with a creeper and factory dual exhaust.. I loved that truck. (sorry I digress)
So vintage in that context is really anything... a new drum would be vintage 2010...
As an adjective the word gets much more interesting:
1. representing the high quality of a past time: vintage cars; vintage drums.
2. old-fashioned or obsolete
3. being the best of its kind: They praised the solo on the Carson show as vintage Buddy.
It is interesting to see that almost all formal collecting organizations have clearly defined limits to "vintage" as an adjective.
For my frame of reference and age... I consider pre-70's as vintage. 70-80's modern era.... 90's+ feels like new stuff.. but that is just my frame of reference.

I'm a 1980 man. If it's prior, it's vintage. Once the eight zero is added, it's done. I didn't just arbitrarily decide on this date. I was very scientific about it. It happens to be the year I graduated from high school. It works for
me.
Thanks for all the replies. What got me going was I was looking on all the usual places for drums that I won't buy anyways and it seemed that I was getting tricked alot. I would see an ad for a "vintage" drum kit, hit the link and there would be a 1983 set of Ludwig's "in near mint condition!!!" .A quick stab to the back button and off to find another set of "vintage" 1988 Tama or Pearl drums...........

Pre 1970 for me. Anything newer is just a used drum.
Vintage is a catch-all generic term at this point. It used to be what was done a generation ago (tie-dyed Tshirts, fringe suede vests, love beads ...). It's a point of view description. For me it's drums (or anything) pre 1960.
Since it's being discussed, what defines vintage from antique? I have a few snares from the 20's and 30's, are they vintage or antique?
Well I did find this regarding antique: any work of art, piece of furniture, decorative object, or the like, created or produced in a former period, or, according to U.S. customs laws, 100 years before date of purchase.
It is interesting to see how the members view a "vintage" drum. It ranged from the pre 60's to 79. Everyone says that these things are worth what people are willing to pay for them and the difference in what people deem to be vintage most definitely directly relates to the ones who laugh at "outrageus" prices and the others who are paying them. This is also the cause of those eye raising threads from sales that were deemed ridiculously overpriced as well. The one posting it probably has a much lower "vintage" cutoff point than the poor schluck who bought it and was put up on here for a few giggles. LOL I guess what could be taken from this is that if you are a seller of drums or instruments you would do well to find your particular customer's feelings on what is vintage/non vintage before negotiating a price or you may be leaving money on the table.
