WFL Orphan Kit Resto

Loading...

So...it took me about a year and 1/2, but I picked up these 1950's WFL orphans one by one and then made a nice matching kit out of it. Sizes are 13x9, 16x16 and 26x14. I converted the bass drum from single tension to double and converted the center lug rack tom to double also. I then wrapped the shells in mahogany veneer, stained them, sealed them and blended the edges. It was a lot of work, but so much fun and well worth the time and effort. Check out these pics (even though 2 of them uploaded sideways). It keeps doing that me for some reason.

Oh...and thanks to Jeff ,aka jccabinets, for valuable info on the veneer and the whole process! He's done some mighty fine work with his projects. His work was my inspiration.

Thanks, Fellas. I've taken them out a few times and get tons of compliments on them! They do sound pretty sweet, too. I let a local drummer use them recently and he liked them so much that he is going to buy them from me, which will fund the 1940 Ludwig project I just picked up. Win win!

Glad you saw the finished product, Jeff. It was from your posts on refinishing shells like this where the idea and inspiration came from. Plus...you've always been gracious to answer my questions. These came out nice, but next time they will be even better! Thanks again.

Beautiful. Would be hard to cut those loose. Great work. I too love putting kits together from orphans. Well done as usual!

Cool! Funds for the 40's restoration. I should do the same but can't bring myself to sell a kit :-) Hope to see pics of the as it goes on the 40's. Thanks!

Thanks, Mike! The only reason I'm letting them go is because of the 1940 Ludwig kit I just picked up. I'm more of a player than a collector, but I'd still take an original kit in nice shape over an orphan kit any day...especially when the 1940 kit costed me $100 less than what the WFL kit is selling for!
